Joining The Thai Army, Would You Send Your Son?

The military is the only career that I ban my son from entering.

I would love him to be a Doctor, but would accept him working in 7-11 if he wanted, but under no circumstances is he going to be shot at because so dippy politician thinks its a good idea.

Don't you think it's the lads decision ?. His life.

Farangland would be in deep doo doo if we all there thought like yourself. :(

No, not really. Yes, it's my sons life, but that doesn't mean I would sit back and let him make dumb decisions.

Would you let your child become a drug addict? What about a bully? A burglar? A thief? A missing parent to their child? After all, it's their life.....

As a father, I feel it is my duty and responsibility to educate and guide my son, being shot at AND shooting other people because a politician says so is not responsible or educated.

Bit daft comparisons, the lad is looking at a career which will make him a respected member of society and earn a living.

So how would you feel if he wanted to be an airline pilot and the risks that go with the job, or a race car driver ? Jobs with risk, l would say that the construction workers do a highly dangerous job too.

Think your wrong wrapping a lad in cotton wool when he is thinking like a man.

Transam, yes many jobs come with a risk and as I've said earlier, he can do anything but join the army. No cotton wool wrapping here.

I don't think the definition of thinking like a man is what the army is. Don't you have to follow orders blindly, no matter how wrong you think they are? Not thinking at all is it? Maybe we need to agree to disagree on this one.....

I did 2 years of military in Singapore and absolutely endorse it.

With a good upbringing and the army's training for teamwork, for tolerance and discipline your son will pick up some invaluable ethics, character for the rest of his life.

Everything in life is based on individuals' reaction. Giving them the tools are great parental blessings

No disrespect, but the story I heard from a mate of mine, who did exactly the same, was rather different. He felt that the two years spent in a mangrove swamp in Singapore was a little bit of a waste of time.

Hahahha guess that depends on what he did with his 2 years there. He was probably thinking of every way to get out of active service or as the local slang goes "Keng King"

I used that time well to learn the word impossible does not exist in life if you are prepared to do it with grit and determination

For those whom I met , you would probably not expect the army to send me to the combat engineers bridging unit and be in charge of these damn things that even machinery strain to lift

However the army thinks its fun to put 50 - 60 guys of different ethic groups an watch them lift these things and then powerhose them to shiny green at at the end of the day without any complaints and repeat it the next day.

I learnt that all Chinese Indians Malays and Eurasians and others can cuss as well as each other while they try to get it done

Makes u appreciate just having ice in your next drink !

Hahahhaah :-)

  1. If he is old enough (Your Son) to join the army, he is old enough to make his own decision on that...
  2. Many young men here join the Army here in Thailand, for the Job security, that's it....just ask them. Been through this with the Son In Law, here, recently.

Absolutely up to him. He is only 17 and still at school. Its a case of after he finishes school at me and the wife giving him some guidance. I am not the father although I treat him like my son. Unfortunately his Dads a deadbeat. Im after the answers like will he see combat in Thailand or do they head overseas to fight? Obviously in any army there is a chance of seeing war, but is the Thai armed forces currently seeing any? Would he be sent down south Thailand?

Does anyone have any relatives, friends what ever currently serving in the Thai forces and how is it?

Thai combat infantry were sent to Korea and Vietnam where they suffered casualties. sent to Somalia for anti piracy operations, engineers to Afghanistan, an army medical team sent to Iraq etc etc. No guarantee his unit would not be transferred to the Deep South or of course anywhere else in Thailand where a conflict might arise.

if he speaks fluent English, may be a career in military intelligence/liaison.

They don't let conscripts anywhere near those postings unless both the army and the conscript agree that he has a future in the army after his conscription is up.

OP is not referring to conscription, but volunteering
