heybruce
It's the annual exercise cobra between the nations here and USA forces The officers are all billeted at Le Meriden nice break for them :-) Can't they exercise in their home country? A multinational joint training exercise where everyone stays in their own country--there's a cost saving idea! It might not be quite as effective, though. rene123
I talked to a few of them tonight. They are just young, American military doing mixed training with Thai military. They seemed like pleasant young men and have only another day or so here. They said it was supposed to be a bit of a holiday but are maybe off to more scary parts of the planet in a few days.

Morden
The Americans you have been talking about are U.S. Marines taking part in Cobra Gold which is an annual joint training mission that has taken place in Thailand for the past 32 years. During these missions the military forces involved get to practice working together as they train for a varity of things including natural disasters. During these missions the marines often take part in working with Thais in the building of schools and other worthy projects all around Thailand. This year as many as 10.000 troops are involed in this training mission which is taking part all over Thailand not just in Chiang Mai.. So, BarnacleBob E.Lee what you are saying is, at this moment Thailand is well defended against no-one but everywhere else is now defenceless in the war against terrorism (abbreviated T.W.A.T) Anyway on a positve note, its Gods way of teaching geography to the Brits and the Yanks. (tongue in cheek mate;tongue in cheek), The Brits. aren't involved in Cobra Gold as far as I know.

NeverSure
It is good for countries to learn to work together. In the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, the role of various countries was huge. The US called it "Operation Unified Assistance." The US dispatched several ships, each of which could generate 90,000 gallons of drinking water from seawater per day. There were massive food and medical drops by several countries, There was The Mercy, a 1,000 bed hospital ship, The Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class super aircraft carrier and support ships, cargo planes in abundance and whatever else could be provided. Also, the US has treaties with several SE Asia and other countries to defend them if needed. It is for this reason that many countries don't need to build up strong militaries. Japan doesn't have nukes. Any time there is a major natural disaster around the world, the West will be there.
MESmith
Shame they didn't use the paramotor fliers as live target practice. Now, that would have been fun to see

Hundred strong Thai mob chasing 6 American military men out Zoe area!!! Apparently he hit a Thai girl! Of course, this is only what I have heard.
