Street Crime warning from Pattaya Police Chief

PATTAYA:--Police Colonel Suwan, the Pattaya Police Chief, raised concerns on Tuesday about the high level of street crime around Pattaya and despite a recent crime crackdown street crime levels remain high.

The Colonel chaired a meeting at Pattaya Police Station on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the problem with his senior officers who have been told to increase patrols and educate Thai’s and Foreign Tourists who are seen to be carrying large bags and wearing jewelry in the street which could potentially make them a target.

He mentioned the high price of gold and the preference of many criminals to target foreigners who they assume are easier targets than their fellow countrymen.

PATTAYA:--Pattaya’s police chief Police Colonel Suwan,was joined by the mayor of the city this week at a public meeting to discuss crime in the city, as the high season for tourists comes to a slow close, so it was time to look back over the season’s successes and failures.

With the new wave of tourism based more on families and couples arriving in the city, those living on the criminal fringe were thought to have seen them as easy pickings as many visitors still insist on carrying large amounts of cash and jewelry.

Heightened awareness among tour operators combined with the new CCTV system citywide and the increase in manpower has enabled the authorities to, in many cases, reduce crime and certainly to increase the speed and success in solving crime quickly.

This certainly is wrong. I have been liviing in Pattaya for several years, and the recent change in tourism demographics is obvious to anyone who wants to look. While some posters in other threads have complained about the massive influx of Russian families to Pattaya, I see the growth of family tourism as a good thing, if properly managed.

I applaud the mayor and the Pattaya police chief for their refreshing honesty in talking about this problem. The othet day I attended a symposium on crime prevention in Pattaya City Hall, and I was impressed by both the mayor and his police colleagues' ability to listen to views from the ex-pat community. I think we all agreed that there is a need to educate tourists about safety issues - and to do hpnestly.

There are no easy answers here, but admitting the problem exists is an important first step. How many times have we seen authorities in Bangkok so concerned with the country's supposed image that they insist upon denying problems that are already well known?

One can only hope that tourism safety information will soon be printed and distributed - including in Russian!!!

I think Locationthailand did not mean the way it came out . I think he was just referring to the amount of men who come here for underage sex and the other sex offerings, as it is one of the sex capitals of the world . My wife and I go to pattaya each week and there are numerous things to do , we see the other side of pattaya but doesn't every city have this. Pattaya is a family filled city as well and there is wonderful restaurants in the city . In all the time we have been there we have not seen any crime , maybe because we are in bed by 10.30 as I am an old fart.

My first time in Pattaya was 12 years ago. I now live in Bangkok and visit regularly. My last visit, last month, I was taken by the number of Russian tourists -- and I agree 100%, they are NOT sex tourists! Many older adults on vacation, maybe considering retirement, many newly weds, and so forth.

I think Russian tourism have saved Pattaya at the very time that European and US tourism was dropped off with their economies slowing down so much.

Pattaya has done a lot of copy checks and raids on shops selling sex aids viagra etc. I have just come back from BKK Sukumvite with my wife went to NZ embassy to do her visa, spent 2 nights. Stayed in Ambasador Soi 11, bottom of Soi 11 is the main Sukumvite rd with all the market selling. Every 3rd table seller had full display of sex pills and sex aids where are the cops to take these away??? Surposed to be illegle ??

Not that it bothered me, I just don't understand why they are there if illegal, and I don't understand why they are illegal. You can get them anywhere in the states. Is sex somehow now taboo? Well, lets get down to basics. What stops criminals is ..........the police.

There is an astonishing concept used in western countries called community policing.

This is where the police actually walk around and deter crime. I know this

would elicit shouts of amazement from Thai police officers but as I understand it, it seems to work.

So I suggest that the police cut back on their general fund raising activities ,

ie check points and shaking down tailor shops, and actually go out to stop

the criminals. Otherwise the golden goose of Pattaya will soon be dead.
