How Does One Find A Cheap Apartment For Monthly Rent?

Recommended Posts

Renting monthly to save big money seems very reasonable on a low budget, but for me it's a hassle as it requires much experience and information.

What I tried to do is get a list of apartments in Bangkok 2500-3000 B monthly in the area I prefer and hit the sois. Problem no. 1 is that caliing doesnt make any sense, bcs nobody speaks English at receptions. Morower, names of apartment buildings aren't in English as well. If I manage to find it is either full, doesnt speak enough English to understand each other or require long contract. I manage to find one place for 2500,receptionist barely speaks English, but we get somone for translation and it seems quite clear. I bring my things to move in and in the evening I find out that the mentioned price is for a long contract, for 1 month it steeps to 3500. If I stay in a guesthouse and give a long time for searching in the areas I dont know, then I spend a lot on daily rent and taxis,so no savings could be made.

Has anyone got good tips of how to go about it? Also do they have a right to not give back my deposit 3000, if I move out after one month, bcs I heard that being possible.

re deposit: yes, thats poossible ANYthing about money (keeping it) is possible in BKK-or THailand for that matter. IF you have ever been longer time in TH, you must have noted that legal means nothing here-its not that USA here.

You seem to belong to the tipical TV-slow learner groups. Premiums to pay also include speakee the angkrit. Otherwise hire a girlfriend for a day or 2 to hit the sois and the translating.

many guesthss offer monthly rates -but often only low season, which it is not now. MOnthly rates in apartmts are mostly withOUT water/electric-hence also that deposit. Lower prices also do NOT include fur-niture.

Such listings are impossibel to make-plus that as soon as a few farang hit them, the prices go up and the units are all full.

As a very rough rule, the RamkamHaeng area is best fit- 10.000s of students, thus with tiny rabbitrooms to house them, and more+more foreign students for a semester or so. An ample supply of students will also give more % of people able to speek the basic angkrit.

I live in a Lat Phrao 101, I pay 2500bht per month without A/C, 3500bht for an A/C room (deposit 400bht), the security is good. It has a security guard, and all floors, and the outside have CCTV. Access to the building is by keycard (200bht) and there is WiFi, not sure how much for that as I have my own hardline with a wireless router.

To get around by MRT you are a 70-80bht taxi ride away, motorcy taxi will charge about 100-120bht or there are busses at about 8bht. The nearest MRT's are MRT Lat Phrao, or MRT Ratchadaphisek Station.

Let me know if you want more info.

There's MrRoomfinder, but a lot of the ads on that seem old.

A lot of the girls working in the bars live in places like that. Maybe befriend one and employ her services as a PA to help you find a cheap room. Quite a few around soi 71 and with reasonable access to transport as well.

Jeez, get on the river boat and head for Ramkhamhaeng, places available from 3,900 baht per month.

Head to On Nut Suk 77 soi 16 plenty of BGs living there, less than 4k per month.

Mine pays about 2700 a month!

No aircon or hot water (unless it's a sunny day) and the mosque is a bit annoying, but she's happy enough and I had no trouble sleeping there. But that's long term.

Forget the internet no matter what you want to pay. Its all about legwork.

IMO best you are going to do is b3000 month and it will be an old apt bldg, standard 24-30sqm box with ac.

Any flat worth living in will start around 4k. I was recently out looming for a new place as we now have noise problems. Anyway, Im seeing smallish newish flats 5.5 up. Surprised really. Many bldgs quite full.

If you are broke I understand, but a sad apt will bring you down. Also consider your neighbors: noise, drugs, theft.

I think I saw some rooms for rent near petkasem soi 89 for 1,500 thb. As we are in Thailand, it's all in thai. Anyway, I just remember because I passed by while driving. they call it "dormitory". I guess bus #84 is on the way and stops at wong wing yiai bts station. The ride takes 1h though.

Some of these shophouses that have like a small Thai retail place on lowest level have empty apartment type units on above levels. So this is definetely leg work with translator.

Above Banglamphu on Samson Rd.in early 00.s I rented an apartment in 4 level shophouse w/ small restaurant on street level. 3000/mo on highest level and also had roof access..

A dormitory is a room with multiple beds, where people share the room, bathroom etc.

You are correct, places can be had cheaper.

The places I mentioned are near Ram Uni stop on the canal boat.

I noticed the adverts yesterday, Bua Lodge and Buddy Mansion spring to mind, just like a hotel room, a/c, bed,tv and fridge, something like 370 baht per night or less than 4k per month.

The cheapest place I have ever seen advertised was a room for rent in Happyland, 1,000 baht per month.

This advice involves speaking a little Thai or having someone with you that can. Find the general location and the price you are willing to pay and then talk to a motorcycle taxi driver. He will run around and do the legwork for you. Next day he takes you on a tour of the rooms. Find one you like, pay the driver a reasonable fee for helping you out. Bingo.

Is Happyland the tower off of soi 71/soi 2? near the 2 7-Elevens? May have been a room share?

HappyLand is beside Tesco/Lotus in Bangkapi.

You mention the mosque on Suk 71, you must be round about soi 28/30/32 way.

Soi 32 has the big red building cant remember its name (PS Apt?), soi 34 has both sides of the soi littered with cheap apt's.

It's the girlfriends place. She backs onto Phrakhanong market. There's a block of flats with Happy in the name an a green mosgue next door visible from her balcony. The noise isn't that bad, just that it starts at 5am just as I'm going to sleep..

Ok I know where you are now, up beside the cinema, there used to be some old wooden houses up that way, havent been up there for a few years, I thought the market was gone due to the new condos on the corner.

Thought you were further down beside the massive mosque about soi 30, right across the road from where Dino snooker used to be.

Don't know a cinema.. It's an old building next to the market. There is a brand new condo building next door on soi 71.

To the OP, if you can find a liveable place for 3,500 for one month only while you look around, I would say that is a pretty good deal.

If the difference between 2,500 and 3,500 for one month (or even for long term) is hurting, then I think you are cutting things a bit too fine.

Hope you find what you are looking for, and hope you tell us what you find.

The easisiet way to get to the cinema (if its still there), go down Suk 71, turn right into soi 2, walk about 20 yards and turn right into the first small soi, the cinema used to right in front of you on the LH side.

May well be gone now with all the new condo work going on there now.

If your mrs has been there a while she will know where the cinema was/is.
