PATTAYA: -- An exploding Air Conditioning Compressor Unit forced a 44 year old British man and his 30 year old Thai wife to jump onto a flat roof at a South Pattaya apartment complex where they waited to be rescued.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, Fire Rescue Services were called to the Argyle Apartments on the Pratamnuk Road in South Pattaya following reports of a 4th floor fire and persons trapped.

The British National and his Thai Wife were rescued and treated for minor smoke inhalation. Another foreign guest was also trapped but jumped onto the balcony of a neighboring apartment complex to safety.

They later explained that after returning to their room after an early dinner, they turned on the air-conditioning but the room soon became too cold so they decided to switch it off. When they did this, an explosion of the compressor unit situated outside their room took place which forced the room occupants to escape through a window of another room on the same floor. Due to the fire and smoke they were unable to leave via the stairs.

Note to would-be apartment renters; if not installed already, ask the landlord to install a fire extinguisher or two, especially in these multi-level units. You wouldn't expect any less in a hotel or in your homeland.

I've never seen a fire extinguisher in a US hotel. Sprinkler system more likely.

Yes.... and this apartment fire and post happened in Thailand where sprinkler systems are still limited to some lawns.
