MAE HONG SON'S FIRE
HM sends relief to refugee camp

The Nation

MAE HONG SON: -- His Majesty ordered 500 bags of relief to be delivered yesterday to refugees left homeless by a fire at Ban Mae Surin camp in Mae Hong Son's Khun Yuam district.

Wilas Rujiwattanapong, who heads a disaster mitigation unit at the Rajaprajanukroh Foundation, presented the bags to Mae Hong Son Governor Nareumol Palawat. They will be given to Karen and Karenni people, most of who fled fighting in Myanmar.

The fire, thought to have stemmed from a cooking accident, on Friday killed 37 people, injured dozens of others and left 2,000 homeless.

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said he had instructed Army Region 3 to dispatch soldiers to aid the victims. He hoped the tragedy would be a lesson for people - to be cautious in daily activities to prevent fires.

Prayuth also commented that though Thailand observed humanitarian principles to aid war refugees, national security agencies wondered whether to repatriate these people, as they had stayed for a long time and their country of origin was now relatively calm.

Meanwhile, Tak Governor Suriya Prasartbundit ordered preventative measures to be implemented at three other border camps. This includes volunteers to "guard" camps from fires, setting up a fire drill, and escape routes. Local bodies were also urged to prepare fire engines in case of emergencies.

By Digital Media

MAE HONG SON, March 26 – About 2,300 refugees whose shelters were burned last Friday will possibly move back to the original site in a month, according to a Thai provincial official here.

Charnchai Srisathien, chief of Khun Yuam district in Mae Hong Son, said the 400 families-- some 2,300 refugees -- are staying in tents about 500 metres from the refugee camp.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has distributed 800 tents, 1,200 blankets and 1,200 clothing items to the homeless refugees and promised to finish building temporary shelters on the grounds of the fire-razed camp in a month.

The blaze killed 37 refugees, 21 of them men and 16 women, and injured more than 100 people.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said health officials have been dispatched to provide medical service, both physical and mental, to the ethnic Karen people at Mae Surin refugee camp in Khun Yuam district.

Health officials were instructed to monitor the health and sanitary situation especially during the first seven crucial days, he said. (MCOT online news)

Industry Ministry mulls industrial estates in Thailand’s four regions
By Digital Media

13642617033876.jpg

BANGKOK, March 26 –The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has been assigned to set up industrial estates in four regions of the country as production bases for small- and medium-sized enterprises, both Thai and from overseas, according to Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk.

He said the IEAT must find four plots of land, each at 500 rai (200 acres), in the North, Northeast, Central and Southern regions for industrial estates, given foreign investors’ interest in expanding their business and manufacturing bases in the kingdom.

It is forecast that the value of foreign companies’ applications for investment privileges in Thailand will reach Bt700 billion this year, he said.

Board of Investment (BoI) Secretary General Udom Wongviwatchai said foreign direct investment (FDI) in Thailand, reported at Bt83.8 billion in the first two months of this year, could reach Bt130 billion in Q1.

He said half of the direct foreign investors were Japanese in the auto industry who plan to expand auto production to three million units.

Malaysia has invested more in Thailand this year in the aviation and agro industry businesses, followed by South Korea and Taiwan, he said.

He indicated that foreign companies have been interested in investing in Thailand thanks to the country’s strength as the geographical centre of Southeast Asian region. (MCOT online news)

"Peace, unity, Pattani state": Banners in restive South

BANGKOK, 26 March 2013 (NNT) - Banners calling for peace, unity and a Pattani state, have been found hung in several places in the southern border provinces of Pattani and Narathiwat.

Officials removed the banners after they received reports of the banners. At least 10 banners were found in Nong Chik and Khok Pho districts of Pattani province, and at least two were found in Narathiwat province.

All the banners proclaimed the same slogan: "Peace, unity, and Pattani state".

Earlier Deputy Prime Minister made clear that the Thai government would not accept an independent Pattani state. Some academics, however, have suggested that a peaceful self-controlling Pattani state might benefit both Thailand and the southern region more.

The banners were found only three days ahead of the peace talk between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), a militant Pattani independence movement. The peace talk is scheduled for Thursday 28th March.

Two local government officials wounded in Southern insurgent shooting
By Digital Media

1364275014773.jpg

NARATHIWAT, March 26 - Two local government officials were shot and seriously wounded today in separate insurgents' attack in Thailand's southern border provinces ahead of the first peace dialogue between the government and Muslim insurgents on Thursday.

The first incident occurred in Narathiwat's Rueso district early this morning when Muhammadsata Dosama, deputy chief of Batong Subdistrict Administrative Organization, was shot three times by presumed insurgents while riding his motorcycle to inspect preparations for a social event at a Muslim religious school.

The victim was seriously wounded and sent to hospital.

In nearby Pattani, a former member of the Talogapo Subdistrict Administrative Organization, identified as Matohay Madiyoh, was shot in Yarang district while driving his pickup truck to a fresh market.

Assailants, riding in another vehicle, approached the victim's pickup and fired at him and his wife.

Mr Matohay was wounded but his wife was unhurt. Police said investigation is now underway as the motivation of the attack could be either the continuing daily unrest by insurgents or local political conflicts.

Another incident occurred in Narathiwat provincial seat when two while banners with the message "Pattani City State" were found hanging on roadside trees.

Police inspected the scene and cut off mobile signals to prevent the a possible bomb explosion ambush.

They believe the banners were linked to the incident in Pattani where similar banners with the same text were found yesterday, possibly referring to the start of peace talks Thursday. (MCOT online news)
