Land Transport Dept to hold road safety promotion activities during Songkran

BANGKOK, 27 March 2013 (NNT) – The Land Transport Department is planning to execute a set of activities to promote road safety during the upcoming Songkran holidays.

Land Transport Department Director-General Somchai Siriwatanachoke revealed on Tuesday that a series of measures have been planned to encourage holidaymakers and motorists to be more cautious while on the road during the Thai New Year festival period in April.

As parts of the measures, the department is determined to make sure that there will be sufficient buses on both inbound and outbound routes throughout the holiday period while nationwide department officers have been instructed to ensure the safety of all bus terminals.

Mr. Somchai said that various anti-road accident campaigns will also be introduced under the cooperation of more than 2,000 businesses across the country, which includes free car and engine inspection services until April 17

Moreover, checkpoints will be set up along both main and secondary routes to inspect public buses around the clock from April 11 to 17, with fast-moving inspection mobile units also to be dispatched throughout the same period.

The Land Transport Department Director-General added that safety campaign signs and billboards will be erected at some 370 spots along the country’s main highways and a public bus passenger protection center as well as the hotline 1584 service will also be set up to receive complaints and reports from member of the public.

Another half assed band-aid solution to a perennial problem.

Instead, how about a massive public service ad campain 24/7/365 until they actually manage to ingrain the idea into the Thai people that drinking and driving is unacceptable, and safety comes first.

Also, getting the BIB to actually do their jobs would go a long way too. Another public service campain against corruption?

Oh, who am I kidding?

they could always teach thais the road laws or supply copies of it to everyone(I have yet to meet anyone that has ever seen one or even read one). They could actually make thais take driving lessons and a road test to get their licence, as well as answer road law questions and get the police to enforce the laws but that would remove too much tea money from corrupt hands. It would also stop a lot of the road accidents and deaths so then they would have to come up with another plan on keeping the population down a bit, nah, forget it lets just talk about doing something instead.

Road safety promotion - take an intercity bus - but only if you like Russian roulette.

But at least you will be sure there will not be a major life threatening crash in the bus terminal, must be a plus thumbsup.gif .
