TRANSPORT
BMTA's bus plan approved
Nakarin Srilert
The Nation

The economic policy screening committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, yesterday approved the term of reference for Bangkok Mass Transit Authority's planned purchase of new buses.

Under the ToR, BMTA will open bids for the supply of 3,183 buses, worth Bt13.16 billion, which are driven by diesel, natural gas and other alternative fuels.

After the meeting, Kittiratt said that among the alternative fuels specified is the gasohol E85, which will help boost domestic ethanol demand and boost farmers’ income.

Some diesel-driven buses would be purchased on condition that they can be converted to consume biodiesel, he said.

The Transport Ministry and the state agency will finalise the number of buses under different fuel categories.

Kittiratt said that the government is ready to shoulder extra fuel cost, if alternative fuels are more expensive than conventional fuels.

"The procurement is an urgent issue as most buses are in deteriorating condition. This should be forwarded for the Cabinet’s approval within April. Though the procurement process may take a while, within 2013 new buses should arrive and the one ones would be gradually phased out," he said.

PHUKET: It is high time for authorities to take serious steps to crack down on oil smuggling in Thai waters. The latest reported case in Phuket revealed itself in the most noxious of fashions last week, when the 20-meter fishing trawler Premika sank in the shallow waters of Klong Tah Jeen, allowing much of its cargo of tens of thousands of liters of diesel fuel to spill out into the remaining stands of mangrove forest that line the waterway

CHACHOENGSAO, March 31, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday led a cabinet meeting in Chachoensao, planning to develop transportation in this eastern province.

Before the mobile cabinet meeting kicked off at Rajabhat Rajanagarindra University, she paid homage to the revered Phra Buddha Sothorn image, or Luang Por Sothorn.

The abbot gave a replica of the Buddha Sothorn image and some amulets to the prime minister and her entourage, including Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan and Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan. The abbot asked the prime minister to help improve roads and piers in the province.

Ms Yingluck said she was intent on developing transportation and making the province a learning centre of ASEAN as well as a tourism destination.

Meanwhile, the People Network for Change of the East submitted a letter to the prime minister at the meeting venue, calling for her to tackle the environmental problem.

The group claimed that local residents in Phanom Sarakham district have been affected by the dumping of chemical waste in the area which contaminated water resources used for local consumption.

They said they lodged a formal complaint to the Department of Industrial Works about seven months ago but to no avail. (MCOT online news)

LPG price to remain until end of May

BANGKOK, 31 MARCH 2013 (NNT) – The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) has agreed to stabilize the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LGP) for another 2 months.

Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal made known that the EPPO meeting had approved a 2-month extension of the LPG price subsidy policy. The country’s LPG price of 18.13 baht per kilogram was originally set to be adjusted on April 1.

The Energy Minister said the delay in the survey on the effect of the price adjustment on low-income earners and street venders has led to the deadline postponement.

Mr. Pongsak stated that the Suan Dusit poll is yet to complete the nationwide survey due to the delay in Bangkok survey.

He went on to say that the study in the capital has been behind schedule because of the March-3 Bangkok Governor election.

As the missing survey is expected to be completed at the beginning of May, the LPG price will remain unchanged until May 30, 2013, said the Energy Minister.

Embassy in Seoul on standby to evacuate Thai workers
The Nation

Labour Minister Pademchai Sasomsap Sunday instructed the Thai ambassador in Seoul to plan for the speedy evacuation of all Thais after North Korea on Saturday declared war with South Korea.

Pyongyang's announcement came as the communist country escalated its bellicose rhetoric against both South Korea and is staunch ally the United States.

The emergency plan includes the setting up of temporary shelters in places like Busan and the arranging of flights and ships to transport Thais, mostly contract workers, to Japan if hostilities really break out, Pademchai said.

The labour attache at the embassy was ordered to gather information on the number of Thai workers in the northern part of South Korea.

About 44,000 Thais are in South Korea and 10 Thai employers are in North Korea, Foreign Ministry spokesman Manaswee Srisodaphol said.

The Thai envoy has reported that people are still leading a normal life in the country, he said.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra directed the Foreign Ministry to closely monitor the conflict on the Korean Peninsula and to take care of Thais living in South Korea.

"We don't want to see any violence or force used. We want to see peace talks," she said.
