Insurance conflicts delay jet ski scandal resolution at least 3 months
PATTAYA:--Resolution of Pattaya’s long-running jet ski scandal will be delayed at least another three months as city officials settle disagreements over insurance coverage.

At a March 29 meeting, Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said the committee formed to end the scams dropped the Feb. 28 deadline by which Pattaya’s jet ski operators had to register for insurance and has not set a new one.

Is anyone surprised?

Seems there is a big divide in Thailand between the haves and the have nots, the haves get rich by robbing and defrauding the have nots and tourists, the divide just gets bigger.

and the crooked haves can carry on, business as usual, they are untouchable.

What does insurance have to do with enforcing the laws against extortion...........?

Wonder if the Insurance in question is the one that gets those in power to look the other way...

What does insurance have to do with enforcing the laws against extortion...........?

The insurance is seen as a way of removing any possible cause for the extortion attempts. If all rentals include 100% insurance cover there is nothing more to be said about damage if it happens.

Still the only real answer is just to ban the damn things completely.

Local insurance company's are not that stupid and surely will not fall victims to scams

I don't see how any insurance company would cover damage caused by a person who operates the vessel without a boat or marine operator's license.

They certainly won't cover damage caused in a motor car accident caused by an unlicensed driver, why would they cover the same in a marine accident.

The tourists who operate these vessels will in most cases have no marine licence or idea of rules of the water

Having to prove the damage might prove a problem with insurance scheme. It will not stop the punters being asked for money to cover the "excess" between insurance and "repairs".

Some "clever" operators have already mentioned to "customers" that the threats to extract direct payments from them will continue, for any kind of unimaginable reasons, like the boat will not be available during repairs so loss of revenues, loss of productivity claiming the insurance or potential denial from the insurance company to reimburse the "supposed" damages, etc...

The scams will continue, no doubt, there is just too much easy money involved.
