Le Tiss was sensational....best Engkand striker of his generation although rarely picked. Unfashionable club but a real football lad.

Those were the days.... :)

A great post. Matt Le Tissier was without doubt the most naturally gifted British footballer i have seen in more than 40 years of watching the game. I read that interview with Xavi, i think it was in the Times, he also said that Barcelona sometimes watch videos of Le Tissier in the dressing room. He played for the love of the game, money was not a driving force for him which is very rare. Yes, people will say he lacked ambition because he stayed with Southampton his whole career, he had the chance to move to bigger and more fashionable clubs but Southampton were the team he had supported since he was a kid. He loved the club and loved playing for them, such loyalty should be applauded. An absolute scandal that he only had 8 caps, also i remember Hoddle playing him in an England b side against Russia just before he picked the preliminary squad for the World Cup. Le Tiss scored a perfect hat trick and then Hoddle,---- left him out. Took Rob Lee instead!! So many players who were not fit to lace Le Tiss's boots picked up 20, 30 plus caps during this era. It sums up why England haven't won anything for nearly 50 years. Remember Le Tissier played behind the strikers, yet scored over 100 premiership goals. My abiding memory is him sitting in the supporters club on Saturday evenings after a home match at the Dell, playing the fruit machine, eating a bag of chips and chatting to all the lads. A true legend, we will not see his like again.
