SONGKHLA, April 23 - Security measures have been tightened in Thailand's commercial hub of this southern border province ahead of the anniversary of the Krue Se mosque incident and the upcoming peace talks between the Thai authorities and insurgent groups.

Songkhla provincial police commander Pol Maj-Gen Suwit Chernsiri said he instructed security officials to continue strict security operations at six checkpoints on the outskirts of Hat Yai, although Songkran holiday has ended.

He said that violence in the deep South continues, while the ninth anniversary of the Krue Se mosque incident where 32 people were killed in clashes between security forces and suspected insurgents falls on Sunday and the government's peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) begin on the next day.

Gen Suwit said security personnel will focus on screening for suspicious items, vehicles and persons.

Regarding reports on requested reinforcements--more troops for Baan Kuanmeed and Baan Tonont checkpoints, Gen Suwit said the matter is still unclear but it will be good to have more security personnel on duty. (MCOT online news)

Security agencies brace for possible violence during Krue Sae anniversary

BANGKOK, 23 April 2013 (NNT) - The National Security Council (NSC) has ordered higher security during the upcoming anniversary of the Krue Sae mosque incident this month while indicating that protest signs against the government’s peace talks with the BRN group were put up by other groups who wish to be included in the peace process.

NSC Secretary-General Lt. Gen. Pharadon Phatthanathabut said other insurgent groups disapproving of the peace negotiation between the government and the BRN had asserted themselves through the recent bomb blasts and protest signs. The government is therefore trying to find ways to talk with them.

As for the second round of talks with the BRN on 29 April, there might be representatives of the RKK joining in and the main issues of the talks would still concern justice in many insurgency-related cases, the NSC chief said.

Meanwhile, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police Pol. Gen. Adul Saengsingkaew revealed that the police were preparing to heighten security in the southern border provinces as this 28 April would be the 9th anniversary of the Krue Sae incident. The police were ready to closely cooperate in terms of intelligence with national security units to prevent violent incidents in the region during the period of commemoration.

The shadow of Mr T is like a heavy cloud over Thailand!

And now he is the "peacemaker" ?? sick.gif

Insurgent groups???? Insurgent group. Me thinks that whilst a Shinawatra name or their cronies are in either government or opposition, not much head way will be made in the peace talks area, these people( Insurgents) have very long memories.coffee1.gif

And what has changed in the daily bombings and killings .. This continous statement of " Security Tightened " is such a repetitive boring joke ... Security by now should be Spider web tight after all these tightening instances... so why are there still daily bombings and shootings / killings...?? And On the increase that too ...?
