They used to have one in Chiang Mai behind Carrefour. Not as you or I know car auctions though. The banks that repo'd the cars also bid against you....as usual the Thais put their own spin on it making it not such a fair deal

The question to ask is, does Thailand have any laws regarding patching up wrecked cars and selling them as 'used never been in an accident'?

The answer to that will indicate the chances of finding a car which is declared 'damaged'.

I've been to several auctions and I am amazed at the prices trade people pay for cars and pick-ups here. Complete shit-boxes going for ridiculous money.

Only hearsay, but I was told that most cars at auctions have a high reserve price, so you are never going to get a bargain. I think the only way to get a car cheap is from a desperate falang.

It's really funny. I am always browsing taladrod, one2car, dealfish, etc., and every dealer Ad says "this car has never been in any flood, I promise, cross my heart and hope to die." laugh.png Makes me wonder...where did all those flooded cars end up? No dealer is selling them....

There's no laws regarding how damaged a car has to be before it's considered unsalvageable - that's up to the determination of the insurance company, but there are definitely laws covering fraud, which is what you're asking.

If you're looking at something not too old that's always been insured 1st class, the easiest way to tell if it's had an accident is to look into the no claims bonus on the insurance policy...

I don't have a car, but it seems to me that for most of the car owners here, almost the entire car is actually owned by the bank, thus the owners need to get as high price as they can for the used one.

Again, I don't have a car here, so I am just guessing.

The choice of cars in LOS are very limited and todays farangs own mostly a vios, city, jazz, Hilux Pick,or a black Tuna. Tose are market cars and they are NEVER cheap. Even desperated farangs sale them to thee deallers, because those cars can be sold to Thais on finance. Finance companies give higher loans on credit, what farangs usually like to pay. Example. 08 Vios floormodel for 425'000 can be sold trought finance to some Thai Peaple with 0% doen paymennt (finance pay comission to the dealer as well). So why have to give it away for 300'k to a farang?
