i'm going to penang this coming wednesday to apply for a non-imm visa based on my marriage in thailand. does anyone know what papers are required (if any) in addition to your passport and the marriage certificate?

:o

also..my wife hasn't changed her name yet (we just registred the marriage today), so is it OK if she has her old name in the passport when applying for the non-imm visa?

They'll want copies of your wife's id and houseregistration. As for the name: well your wife is free to take your last name or keep her own. If she wanted to take yours, I'd expect it was supposed to be done as part of the marriage registration, not afterwards (at least that's what we did).

And if the wife doesn't possess a house, but she lives in rent ?

In Thailand farang husband and thai wife have the right to live togehter at condition his wife own a house in his name?

Well I think I'll look for a rich thai girl. Because the poor girls can never aspire to to live in Thailand with their farang husband.

The only important thing for the land of smile are only the money.

No! They can live together, wherever they please - no need to own the place!

You have as bit technical problem with your qoutes, right?

You will need:-

1. Your passport + signed copies of the main page

2. Your marriage certificate + signed copies

3. A copy of your wifes ID card and / or passport (bringing the wife as well cannot hurt).

4. Two passport size photographs

5. The completed visa form (fill it at the consulate or if you use a visa agent he will have the forms)

6. 500 Ringit fee (for a multi entry non-O).

I did a non-o in KL last month, no requirement for demonstration of funds or the house registration (just wifeys PP and ID card).

I don't think Penang is any different but if you have the house registration take it just in case. Same goes for the bank book / statement, but don't offer it unless it's asked for (we don't want the consulate people getting ideas, do we?).

Don't worry about the name, my missus changed her name, but not to mine, she changed back to her fathers family name just to cause total confusion. Absolutely no problem with the visa :o

and once there, avoid the chicken :o:

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Reuters) - Malaysia reported a new case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu on Monday among dead chickens in a village in the state of Penang.

No, I haven't any kind of problem. But I'm just grieved to see that the money are the only criteria to decided if you have the right or not, to live in Thailand.

I know everywhere is the same , but in my coutry my wife can stay with me without the lot of problems that I have for live in Thailand.

So in this case we cannot speaking about of reciprocity of treatment between Europe and Thailand .

Congratulations rainman.... You've been a busy man lately - now's the time to adjust to thai speeds. You've got a stamp in your passport that allows you to stay in thailand for 90 days, right? Immigration wouldn't want to bother with your application for extension until the last 30 days of your 'permitted to stay-period'.... Slow down and enjoy ...

keep us posted on your extension activities...do you intend to stay in Thailand the entire time or to go in and out? I would like to get a rung on the ladder...3 x extension then maybe PR...but I will be working abroad until I can't work no more being over 60 y.o. Someone said that with an extension you got to get a separate visa for multi-entry goin' in and out....

check it out and let us know...

all the best...if that girl in your avatar is your lady she's a doll...ie., very beautiful in US speak

i do intend to stay in thailand for the time being, i've been in and out enough for the past two years and yes, that's my wife. :D

and congrats for avoiding the bird flu down there.... :D

the first thing the taxi driver in penang asked me was "oh, you're coming from bangkok? i heard everyone there was infected with bird flu". i don't know what they're telling in malaysian TV but they don't seem to draw a pretty picture about thailand down there... :D

Congratulations on your marriage rainman (belated, sorry!)

To answer your question, yes you have to wait until the end of the first 90 days until you apply for your one year extension.

And it is true, you must get a re-entry permit when you have a one year extension or you have to start the whole visa/extension process over again.

Best wishes!

also, what documents do they require at immigration when requesting for the 1 year extension? i'm sure others have done this before ...

i am guessing evidence of the bank account (is it 400k or 800k?), as well as my proof of income from overseas, i assume. anything else?

Posted

The wife, her ID card, her home register (not sure if this is required if not living there but good to have in any case). Copies.

Bank Passbook, bank letter of account balance. Copies of passbook pages.

Passport and TM card. Copies.

Your income will be asked so if you have any kind of statements show them and give copies.

Photos together the first time. In your home preferred.

Signature of person concerned on all copies.

Most of the visit will be the wife giving bio data type information to the officer.

If you are around immigration prior to application day they probably will have a printed sheet of specific requirements - they do ask for slightly different things some times.

thanks a lot for all the information, sounds like i have everything. as for my income (which i get from overseas, i have several own companies), is it enough to provide the "marriage application" that my embassy provided (which was required by the amphur) ...as on that one it shows my annual income in THB and is certified by the ministry of foreign affairs. as anything else, for my income (except banking statements showing overseas transfers) won't do much good if they're signed by myself. :o

I do not believe most offices have any requirement for income paperwork. But there is a question on the bio data sheet that has to be filled in with your income so they come in handy for that. If you have them they will probably ask for a copy but if wife just provides a figure do not believe they will be asked for. By signing the paper you certify it is a true and correct copy. I always took a file folder full of odd bits and pieces so if something was asked for I probably had it. But in most cases if you don't have they would move onto something else. The must haves are the ID materials and bank letter/passbook.

when i go to make the 1 year extension, how long does it approximately take to receive it from when the application is submitted (in Bangkok, Suan Phlu)? i heard it takes anywhere from 1-2 months ...what happens if your visa time runs out and you didn't get the extension yet? thanks a lot for all your help :o

Posted

You make application during the last 30 days of your permitted to stay period. They immediately stamp your passport with a new permitted to say stamp about 45 days in the future and when you return on that date the approval has been received and you obtain the remainder of the one year or you receive another short extension (common upcountry but not usually necessary in Bangkok).

Posted

ok that makes sense, thanks :o last question ...is there any minimum time the 400k must have been on the bank account prior to application or is it ok if it was just transferred in like 5-10 days before? thanks again :D

Posted

The reason for the money is to support your wife so if there has been no money in the account until you do your extension process it will probably get mentioned (although perhaps not on your first extension). It is best to use the account for normal needs and top up as required (at least just before extension).

ok, i assume i can use my regular account where i transfer money from overseas every month ..that's in my name only though, not in a joint account with my wife. assuming thats ok to use for the 400k?

that way they'll see i have a regular income from overseas for two years now in thailand, in addition to the 400k...

i'm going for my application next week ..i have one point i'm not clear on, though. on my "marriage application" (for the amphur, issued by my embassy), it states my annual foreign income (baht 1M+), but i'm not paying taxes on that in thailand. is that a concern for the immigration office or will they not care about that? :o or should i just say i live from personal savings i transfer from overseas..

What if you have a filthy rich Thai sugar mama who provides for all your worldly needs and you never have to lift a finger except to............well, you get the idea? :o

...should i just say i live from personal savings i transfer from overseas..
As far as I understand, officially foreign income is taxable in Thailand only if you bring it into Thailand to cover your living expenses during the year in which the income is earned.

Therefore, if asked, you should declare that your remittances to your Thai bank account are from savings, in other words from income earned in earlier years.

As a general rule, proffer to the immigration officer only the documents you are asked for, starting with those that are published as being required, as mentioned by Lopburi: application form; passport; bankbook (the transaction code in the book shows that the deposit was a foreign remittance); your wife, with her ID card (all right, she is not a document); photos of living together (your place of residence).

Offering unnecessary documents might confuse the officer, make him think that you wish to apply on the basis of monthly income (which would require Thai tax registration, receipts of Thai tax payments, etc.)

As you are applying for your extension on the basis of 400+k in the bank, it should not be necessary for you to provide proof of a certain monthly or annual income, but if asked a verbal answer may suffice. If necessary, you can always give a copy of that foreign income certification you mentioned that you used for your marriage.

i just called immigration to confirm the documents i need and they pointed me to their website (which however wasn't updated since 2004, i think).

on http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/ba...p?page=service# it states:

- Evidence certified by the applicant's embassy or consulate showing the applicant's marital status.

i assume that's evidence showing i'm now married? i dont think the embassy can issue this ..it would have to be issued in the home country and sent here...am i wrong? i never heard of anybody needing this.

Posted

All you should need is your Thai marriage certificate/copy. If you were married overseas you would probably have to have a confirmation letter/notorized copy or such from your Embassy that what you present as a marriage certificate is real.
