I'm going to the UK next month and needed to make sure I can drive there.

I went to get an international driving permit here, on the basis of my Thai Driving License.

I was incredibly surprised, it was very very easy and I was in and out in under 10 minutes.

I brought with me -

• A Thai 5 year driving license
• A work permit
• passport
• copies of all of the above
• 505 baht.

It was accepted, a form was created, i signed it, and then i was presented with an international driving permit.

No embassy letter, no medical certificate, no nothing else. I was very amazed, and had been dreading this...

I did the same in about the same time, without the work permit, just family visa, used it to rent a car in Canada, no probs though the guy in Avis Canada told me I was a funny looking Thai~!

....I would have asked him what he meant by that racist statement....you never know you may have got a discount if you suggested you were going to report him...

OP forgot to mention two passport sized photographs.

All copying (2) of each and photographs can be obtained at the Land transport office, at least on Sukhumvit in BKK.

Wife went to get a new licence I went for IDP. She got # 383 when current count was at 310. I got #911. Before I could get to a seat alongside her to wait. (Ding) #911 to desk #6.

Then of course I had to wait another eternity for #383:-)

You can use a Thai 5year car driving license in the UK for up to 1 year no IDP needed.

Can't use a Thai motorcycle license though.
