According to the masseuse, her employer demanded oral sex shortly after she started, threatening her job security—an essential lifeline for her, as she needed to care for her 89-year-old bedridden mother. Her claims suggest she was not alone in this ordeal. She alleged that other female colleagues experienced similar harassment, creating an environment of fear and compliance. Eventually, unwilling to endure further assaults, she chose to resign and share her story with local media in the hope of preventing others from experiencing the same fate. The public reaction has been mixed. Her account, lacking tangible evidence, led some sceptics to question its authenticity. Comments emerged, questioning her rationale for staying after the initial assault and her decision not to involve law enforcement. One netizen asked, “Why didn’t you report this to the police?” while another wondered why she believed compliance was her only option when multiple jobs are available in Patong. Conversely, others showed empathy, suggesting that the psychological impact and fear of dismissal might have deterred her from speaking out sooner. They argued that in cases of alleged abuse, the victim’s voice should be prioritised over unverified accusations of deceit. While the masseuse has come forward, it's unclear if any legal proceedings have been initiated against her former employer, sparking further debate about the effectiveness of existing support systems for victims of workplace harassment in Thailand.
