"The motive of Chandrakasem Rajabhat University graduate is still unclear, though Chalerm said it it was not necessarily political"

Chalerm, please stop talking.

He's not so far off. Often these types of breaches are not politically motivated.

You could well be right. If hackers deface a website it's for a reason. If it's just fun or the challenge then insulting remarks would seem appropriate but if it's political then political statements would be made. I suppose the comment regarding her performance as PM could be political but it seems a bit basic.

I believe the comments were in English which might be significant in that they were intended for English speaking viewers. Of course it could also be that the hackers are avid readers of glossy Thai mags which seem to love English headings above Thai text. I've absolutely no idea why they do this but you can even see it in advertising for cars as well.

Not sure why Yingluck would need a twitter account, most of what she does is public knowledge and the rest she would never twitter anyhow. I fail to see the point in it.

I would thought have it was asking for trouble, especially with a political ingenue like KY.

I mean, she can hardly tweet to her girlfriends, "I think that Obama guy fancies me!"... can she?

"That statement is false. The company neither knows nor is involved in any project with Mr Narongrit. Our administration is based on good governance, transparency and accountability.

Meanwhile Narongrit, a software programmer from Nakhon Si Thammarat province met with police and denied he had defaced the PM's Office website and left a derogatory message on Wednesday.

He said he is innocent and had been wrongly implicated probably by a hackers' team with which he is in conflict.

BANGKOK, May 10 - A man suspected of hacking into the website of the Prime Minister's Office and posting messages insulting the premier surrendered to police this morning, denying the allegation saying he is ready to cooperate with the police investigation.

Narongrit Suksarn, a 29-year-old native of the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, reported to Pol Maj Gen Pisit Pao-in, chief of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD). He pleaded his innocence and claimed that he was smeared by the "Unlimited Hack Team," a group of hackers to which he formerly belonged but now is no longer a member.

The Unlimited Hack Team earlier posted a message on its Facebook page denying any involvement in the hacking.

Mr Narongrit said his surrender was meant to prove his innocence. He also offered to help police with technology to improve the security of the system from hacking.

The suspect's home and his computer was to be checked thoroughly by the police to collect possible evidence, Gen Pisit said.

About 20 hackers are being targetted by the police investigation as they have potential to intrude into the servers of many websites, according to the TCSD chief.

The police have not yet found any clues indicating that a major political party was behind the hacking, as had been alleged.

The homepage of the Prime Minister's Office website was hacked on Wednesday and the hacker left disdainful messages in parody of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Democrat Party leader and former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva voiced his support for the government to take legal action against the wrongdoer in the hacking case. He also urged the government to take similar action against other offenders in computer-related cases.

Mr Abhisit brushed aside an attempt to link his party with the suspect who is a resident of Nakhon Si Thammarat, a major stronghold of the Democrat party. He urged the police investigators to proceed with the case in a straightforward manner. (MCOT online news)

Good luck with that. jerk.gif A hacker that gave himself up to the police - no way he could have 'cleaned' his computer beforehand. laugh.png

Offers to help police track down the 'real culprit' behind hacking

BANGKOK: -- A man who turned himself in to police yesterday denied having anything to do with hacking into the PM's Office Ministry's website or posting rude remarks against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Meanwhile, the "Unlimited Hack Team", which was mentioned in the hacking, posted a message on Facebook yesterday saying that Narongrit Suksarn, aka "Lek Window 98 SE", was not a member of the group and that it had no part in the hacking. The message said "only mad people" would mention them in an attack like this.

'Framed by enemies'

The 29-year-old computer programmer said he had reported to the Crime Suppression Division of the National Police in order to prove his innocence. He said he been framed by his enemies, citing a previous conflict with the "Unlimited Hack Team", which challenged him to hack into their website and he succeeded in doing so.

He said he was reporting to the police in order to provide them with tips on identifying the real hacker. Narongrit went on to explain that though most hackers camouflaged themselves, they do leave behind certain clues that can be traced. The most important thing, he said, is to understand the method used to hack the system and then to follow up on this lead.

"There has been some talk in hackers' circles about another job being completed. Hackers regularly break into different websites, be it government or private, such as the Channel 3 website that was hacked earlier. However, I insist that I have nothing to do with this attack," he said.

Police said that Narongrit was not being treated as a suspect at present and no charges have been brought against him.

He has just been "invited" to meet the officers and provide them with leads, they said.

However, Narongrit's home has been searched and his personal computer confiscated to check on all digital traces. Police are also keeping a close eye on 20 other hackers.

Police said they believed that using one hacker to catch another will eventually bear fruit, adding that the culprit could get up to five years in prison and a fine of no more than Bt100,000 under the Computer Crimes Act.

In a related development, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said nobody should come to any conclusions yet about whether or not the attack is politically motivated.

He also promised to inform the public right away if there are any new developments.

Considering the government's and police's declarative rhetoric just days previously, it shows the laughable ineptness of their combined abilities. It lends great credence to the words the hacker, whoever it is, left on the PM's Officer Minister's website.
