I have come across various sizes of this particular species of spider and I found one huge one on my front gate recently.
Can anyone please tell me what it is called and if it is poisonous?

Spiders are neat creatures. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Most creatures only bite if they feel threatened. When in Asia or Australia I've just learned not to blindly put on my shoes or hiking boots without first shaking them. You never know what might fall out.

Good God, I am a huge arachnaphobe. Not as bad as the Camel Spiders I saw in the Middle East, but if I saw that on my house, I would seriously consider moving, possibly to Antarctica.

Looks like Huntsman to me...

Harmless unless you're prone to Anaphylaxis

Yep ... I was thinking the same as you ... but maybe, like in Thailand ... same but different.

The thing I like about spiders is that they are all insectivores - so unless you enjoy having a lot of smaller bugs you can't easily see living about your home - when a spider you can see takes up residence you already have an established "bug problem".

that ain't no huntsman...it's got hairs all over it (hirsute huntsman?)

but seriously, better get out the bazooka 'cause if ye don't kill it it'll certainly crawl over yer face when yer innocently asleep in bed...
