Happy Being The Farang

Featured Replies

People are often posting that they will always be the farang, got news for you guys that say that, you are the Farang.

So what If despite you best efforts to weazel your way in, your still the Farang, rember that's exactly what you are, or is it a deep seeded wish to fully morph into a Thai.

We are different, that's what draws you to them and them to you in the first place, the attention men get here compared to home blows men away, thats why they flock here.

Should you suddenly find you are accepted and no longer viewed as simply the Farang, you will just be another part of the scenery and likely not recieve the attention that drives a man's ego.

I am a Farang, love Thai's, never wish to be anything other then what I am.

Glad you love your way of life being a farang

We never pretended to be anything else than farang.

That's the constant reminder that gets tedious.

In our home country we don't constantly remind Thai immigrants they are not from there.

Why do we have to put up with it?

I'm also not happy the way farang is treated in Thailand, but you don't need to put up with it if you don't want.

You can leave at any given time.

you dont have to put up with it, however in what way are you constantly reminded that you are a farang, by being called a farang.

Should they stop being thai and change their language, because farang is simply the word they use.

The only way someone can remind you is if you have forgotten.

I am also the falang, love being the falang and love my full extended thai family to bits cause they all love their one and only falang back just as much.

Why is the "Thainess" topic always in the top ten on this forum? Who gives a flip if you are enjoying yourself. If you are not, then go somewhere else. No need to re-hash the same topic over and over and over again.

And how does that make you feel? thumbsup.gif

Just be who you are.

Be the 'farang', no worries....don't be the ATM, the Buffalo doctor etc..

Retain your common sense.

While these sound like old expat cliches, there are a lot of lessons to be learned therein dear friend.

Learn to exhibit infinite patience and you will be a very happy person in Thailand.

I think that it doesn't matter what country you are in,if it isn't your native country then your will always be the foreigner !!!

I have lived in The Netherlands for 13 years,I speak Dutch, eat Dutch and live Dutch but am and always will be Shaggy the Englishman to them. (and rightly so)

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what people call you or think of you,if you are happy with your life, have people that love you and you have good health.... then nothing else matters.

Same for me after 40 years a Swiss citizen and getting to the stage where I criticised the increasingly low standards of spoken dialect. I took a strong part in local and cultural life and was always 'Dr Englaender'.

For me it is to above the same as what the OP has described in #8.

I also get falang lovingly as in "Big Falang" which fits along with other pet names from my partner like "Big Love".

From her daughters I never get falang, but King Kong, ling yai etc. but that is equally shared with "LIng noi" and "little monkey" back to them. They are the holders of the key word that stops me in my tracks every time, no matter how p!ssed or angry I may have just been with them...."Dad" but in many different shapes, tones, expressions, with still more to come. That is my priceless. That makes he feel awesome, and falang melts to a nothingness.

From younger cousins I get "Pah" or "uncle". Cool. That's the parts of Thailand I also love, is the extended family. Who am I to bitch. Along with from all my partners immediate family I get my first name. I am a lucky son of a bitch to have such a family.

As one moves further afield from that inner circle of family and friends to their interactions with the wider thai world then falang, farang, fulong... becomes more widely heard. That still I have no issue with.

About the only place it becomes significant for me is not the saying of falang, but the tone it is being used in. But that is no different in any other mix of cultures. Besides falang, I also have Kiwi, cousie and bro, and others, depending if I am with the Aussies in my life or the peoples of Pacifica. If all of them it is not the word itself it is the tones and expressions with it. The cool thing is that with all of these groups have come the greatest joys of my life. For the few who wish to call me falang, I have no problem as the rest who use it with friendship and love far out weight the rest by the stars and beyond.

Indeed...but then drop the fact that you've understood every word on them like a ton of bricks when it comes to the crunch....

Never fails.

Farang means the white face from abroad, ie you are not from here, ie not entitled to Thai nationas priviledges.

It does not mean Welcome to Thailand, you are different but I'll treat you the same as everyone
