Havinng had a bad attack of brown algae in my 50 gal tank, after 3 years I thought of having a re-design,so I visited the market by Tesco on the ring road and was pleasantly surprised at how the collection of aquarium stockists had grown over the years.

I transfered all my fish to a large plastic container and cleaned the tank completely...new gravel and then went to see what plants were available.....big surprise for me....3 of the shops had very good selections and so for a total expenditure of 2,600 baht...my fish have new home.

Hi Gennsis, What kind of lights do you use over your tank? I use the T5 thats the very thin florescent lights,Daylight,
I see you

have what I think are Anubias they don't require so much light,I also use the coke bottle DIY Co2 system, just a bottle, tube

Sugar ,water and yeast.

I change about 20% of the water every week, don't feed too much, and you should have no trouble with algae.

The tank is looking good

As a young teenager, I used to raise and sell Vail-tail and Lyre-tail guppies to local pet shops, as well as Sail-fin Mollies and a few other species. I also raised two types of aquarium plants. I guess I had at least a dozen tanks going at all times, and did this for about 5 years. I even maintained tanks in a couple of doctor's and dentist's office waiting rooms. I know how to raise tropical fish. Or at least I thought I did...

But for some reason, I could NOT keep fish alive in Chiang Mai! No matter what I tried, even the damn plants died! Everything would test perfectly within specs, then BANG! Each morning another dead fish, and after a month or so, the plants would be rotting off at the gravel line. I tried different water, buying different fish stock, buying different gravel, different filter materials, testing water for NO2, NO3, Ph, Ammonia, Cl, K, everything I could test for! And I just couldn't keep tanks healthy. The water always 'looked' good. But everything kept dying. Go figure...

If you arrive at that Tesco the aquarium shops are directly behind it. There are about 5 of them. Most look well run with clean tanks of fish, one is on my 'don't buy here' list. Shogun is the most expensive place but has a huge variety of fish and plants. They also have marine fish. I opted for a marine aquarium in my home but then discovered they don't sell any coral. The owner keeps any coral he gets for himself. Take a look at his tank. It is gorgeous.

I believe Konthieng is Kat Khamthiang (Kammthiang Market)

you are probably right...I find that Thai's have at least 5 different names and spelling for any one location

I am using a single 30 watt tube...seems bright enough and hopefully wont encourage algae again

.

Apart from the algae in the old tank set-up the plants grew well and I never saw a reason for CO2 injection and I only do a 20% water change every month

. I dont keep too many fish...3 Angels which are 3-4 years old now...3 Clown Loach..( just love these) and 3 Swordtails...so the water should'nt get too polluted.

I have a water flow of 50 gals/hr through sponge and then ceramic rings, which over the years seems good.
