JetsetBkk
"Patch Tuesday" is the second Tuesday of each month, on which Microsoft regularly releases security patches. Many websites recommend NOT turning on automatic updates for fear of another "Black Tuesday" which has occurred in the past and resulted in computers simply not booting after a patch had been applied. If you want to be a pioneer - and get the arrows in your back - then allow MS to update your PC immediately. If you want to play safe, wait a week or two for the other pioneers to report problems and for MS to re-issue the bad patch. Here's an example: http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-re-issues-botched-black-tuesday-patch-209684
Chicog
Sometimes the whole Windows Update/BITS setup gets completely screwed and it's a pain in the arse to fix. When I absolutely can't wipe and restart, as a temporary solution I just google "Windows x x64 update download kbnnnnnnn" and go to the direct link for the updates, then install them manually. Not something you want to do every month, but as a temporary solution it works.
BB1950
I also use Windows 7 Ultimate and Microsoft .Net Framework and had a similar problem during an update cycle at the end of last year. The problem came about due a rollup of updates of .NET Framework. I downloaded Microsoft's NetMicrosoft .NET Framework Repair Tool to repair the .NET Framework installation. I never had any problems since. You might give it a try. If it doesn't work try uninstalling all the .Net Framework installations and then reinstall .NET Framework. It should be available in the optional updates of Windows Update. Edited May 17, 2013 by BB1950

Pib
Boy, the Windows and Office updates/patches that download this Wednesday/15May had at least one update file that took my laptop a while to apply. The wife and I decided to go out for a lunch, when turning off my laptop it said updates have been downloaded and are ready to apply, I gave my usual "sure, go ahead" response, Windows started the update process. When we got back from lunch about one hour later my computer was still processing 6 of 12, I watched it for about 10 minutes and it was still processing 6 ot 12 with very, very little disk activity, I'm thinking my computer had locked itself up in attempting the updates but regardless of very little disk activity the display indicated the update was still proceeding. But I had never experienced an update that took over an hour...and it still wasn't done updating. About 5 minute later I was literally within seconds of pushing the power off button to let it revert to restore point and try the updates again, but then 6 of 12 completed and 7 thru 12 went fast and completed in around 5 minutes. Later I went to my Windows Update menu to see what updates had been installed and actually those 12 updates had actually applied 58 separate updates, only 8 of them were specifically Win7 operating system related and the remaining 50 were updates for my MS Office Enterprise programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) and for MS Net Framework 4. I've had updates before that took almost 30 minutes, but this latest update was probably the longest ever. When the updates were done, the computer worked fine as normal....but that 6 of 12 file patch had me worrying for a while as I really didn't want to interrupt the Windows update process (like they tell you not to do), but this update install was taking ssssoooooooooooooooo long even with the update downloaded before the install began. But how many updates a person gets and how long the install takes depends greatly on what Microsoft programs a person has loaded on their computer...for someone not using Word, Excel, etc., they would have got fewer update files and therefore the updates would have installed faster. BB1950
Thank you Is it safe to uninstall .Net Framework if it will not reinstall will my computer and net access still function? I can take the computer to ou local computer geek but he does not speak English and it is dificult to explain the problem I did try the download recommended but it wont run First of all , .NET Framework doesn't affect network access! The name is kind of a misnomer. From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework The .NET Framework (pronounced dot net) is a software framework developed by Microsoft that runs primarily on Microsoft Windows. It includes a large library and provides language interoperability (each language can use code written in other languages) across several programming languages. Programs written for the .NET Framework execute in a software environment (as contrasted to hardware environment), known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR), an application virtual machine that provides services such as security, memory management, and exception handling. It can be safely removed. Since the Microsoft tool wouldn't run, try this tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/NET-Framework-Cleanup-Tool.shtml If that doesn't work then read this: http://singularlabs.com/kb/how-to-repair-the-microsoft-net-framework/ Once you get .NET Framework removed, Then install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5. Do Windows updates until you don't get anymore updates. Good luck! Edited May 18, 2013 by BB1950

keeniau96
Much as I love Linux just on basis of your apparent computer savvy I cannot recommend it for you. I can recommend that you look to Woody Leonhard, a well known WIndows expert for the safe-to-update advice. He publishes an ongoing "Defcon" status about when it is safe to install those updates. Is it ok to ignore these updates or does that leave my security vulnerable? No, it's not OK to ignore the updates. There is a possibility of a security vulnerablility. Since the previous attempts have failed, you might try this Microsoft Fix-It: Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update There may be a problem with Windows Update or Windows Defender. By any chance are you using Samsung KIES? I'm trying to figure out what you are running that's using .NET Framework. There are others who do, who have the same problem with the same updates. GarryUK
I work with computers and deploy many every day, I've seen this happen often. Some good advice given, but if you've not tried yet, just install them one at a time. It'll take a long time and a load of reboots, but I've seen it where they keep failing as a bunch and undoing the changes, but one at a time has worked for me. Can't hurt if nothing else has worked yet.

It is not so annoying as to wat to reinstall etire system but does seem to require a few minutes daily and I guess while these updates keep reloading it is slowing down my already terribel connection here in the sticks. BB1950
I do have Samsung Kies is this the conflict perhaps? I could unistall it ? It could be a contributing factor. You could remove it and reboot the computer. Then try the windows update. Don't reinstall KIES until this problem is resolved. If you still have a problem, we don't know where you exactly stand. Please go to Program and Features post a list of all the instances of the .NET Framework that are listed. The click "view installed updates" and post the list of all instances of the .NET Framework updates that are installed. There are still some remedies. NeverSure
I like the suggestions given. They are good and worth trying. If it was my computer I'd make a restore point. Then I'd install (free) CCleaner and use it to uninstall every instance you might have of .net. Then I'd reboot. Then I'd clean and backup the registry using CCleaner. Then I'd reboot. Then I'd do a windows update. You should get a fresh copy of the latest .net in the update. Then I'd set Windows update to download but not install updates. This is time saving if you don't have a real fast connection. I like getting notifications that updates are downloaded and ready to install. Then I can look, choose, and run the update. I have an uber-fast connection and I still like it. Why waste any time at all. If there's another same update to .net, don't check it to update. Good luck.
