Iran's Rafsanjani barred from standing for president

TEHRAN: -- Iran's electoral watchdog has barred moderate ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani from standing in a June 14 presidential election, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

Eight candidates won approval to stand -- five conservatives close to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as two moderate conservatives and a reformist.

Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, a close but controversial aide to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was also omitted from the list.

No explanation was given for the disqualifications.

Iran's electoral watchdog sounds like the US version of the Tea Party.

Well, the Tea Party does include a high percentage of fanatic religious fundamentalists so it does have at least that in common with Iran's true leaders.

Except the Iranian fanatics kill gays, apostates and just about anyone who opposes them. The tea party march peacefully with a few placards, they are socially somewhat conservative, but I've yet to read about them murdering anyone they disapprove of. Furthermore the tea party are not in power, unlike the Iranian fundamentalists. Aside from that your simile is perfect. cheesy.gif

tea party supports policies that bomb nations. And that kills all includind the poor gays and apostates

The way elections are held in Iran is very different from how
we do it in the West. The only people
that can run for president are those that have been approved of by the
Ayatollah and his committee of 12 religious leaders. Thus insuring that all candidates are
screened as acceptable before they are allowed to run for office.

So there are no choices for Iranian voters who want someone moderate (forget about liberal)? Oy!

The name of the country is the Islamic Republic of Iran. Need anyone say more?

If more needs to be said, it's that the ayatollahs run the country by controlling who the voters can consider to vote for. They can vote, for example, Sharia Law Guy #1 or Sharia Law Guy #2 etc. No women or dogs allowed.

Believe it, or not, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejadis considered a 'moderate in Iran. They don't want any more softies like him. whistling.gif

Yes I know.

Plenty of Iranians are not too chuffed about it. The trouble is they soon disappear.
