Gone 8 Months....my Observations......

Recommended Posts

I've been back several days now and there have been some changes.....maybe some of you all can clarify a few things....

Street food on MM is gone, both the guy with the huge vent (across from LK) and the whole strip of them towards the North end of MM. Was this a sanitation crackdown?

I noticed the sidewalks in the NongHoi area are a little better. Maybe someone asked the businesses to keep a path. Maybe I just caught them on a good day.

LK looks more uninviting than ever. Reminds me of UTH, many for sale, few customers.

So many signs with pictures of hamburgers......last thing in the world I crave for here, that's poor man's food in the States.

I made a special trip for duck soup over behind ViengPieng Condo. She closed down, and my backup noodle place was closed down also.

DQ now gets 12 THB for a small.....ouch!

Clearly fewer Europeans here than any of the other 5 Mays that I have been here. The "shock" people seem to have dispersed, as well, but there are still tons of prison tatt people. My bank manager is still there, and opened the door for me at 9 am. My favorite fruit carts are still operational and still charging 10, not 20 like in Khon Kaen. The bars seem to really struggle with cold beer. Walked out of a fly infested seat area, where they didn't have cold ones. Went to Spicy and ordered a Tiger, ying-ying. She said no tiger: San Miguel. And she handed me one at room temp. I mentioned to another place that I wouldn't be staying because of the lack of chill, and they said it is very hot. I said that is EVEN MORE REASON TO HAVE IT COLD. Chang isn't that good ice cold, but if it is just a little warm, you will taste it all day. Refrigeration was brought to Siam in 1936, by an American named Carrier....shouldn't 77 years be long enought to learn to use it?

The number of ladyboys has increased more than the rate of inflation, which also seems a bit high.

It's great to be back!

Well they have now completed the black top on Sunday walking at, so when it pisses down you can now skin the girl from one end to the other, instead of dawdelling.

The longest three month job ever....over a year I think.

Nothing worse than a warm beer. How someone can serve such a thing with a straight face is beyond me.

You know you are talking about folks that think it's ok to pour beer over ice. Need I say more?

Eyecatcher it has been 6 hours plus since your post and I am baffled by your phrase " skim the girl".Please enlighten me as this may have been something I would like to do!

The whole area in and around the Loi Kroh road, over the years has turned into a complete septic dump.

It was probably not much different prior to when our Thighlander went away, but it only takes a short period of absence to make one realize what a grot hole that area is today.

These days I rarely venture out into that area, no incentives to visit there whatsoever and I guess I am sharing the same observations and views as the tourists. Unfortunately, for the Western tourists and expats who enjoy a bit of social and nightlife, there is virtually no other alternatives for them in Chiang Mai.

The worst of it is, that it`s not even cheap, but rather expensive and nasty.

Welcome back to Chiang Mai.

PS: I have never of, skim the girl either or the OP`s comment; The "shock" people seem to have dispersed, as well, but there are still tons of prison tatt people ???.

I speak 3 languages, English, Thai and Rubbish, but sorry, I don`t speak Jive.

Loi Kroh Moon Muang Utterly Terrible Hangover

I thought UTH was Udonthani ? MM i guessed was Moon Muang but Metro Manila does make it more international and interesting. MM could mean "meat market" which may then actually mean its Loh Kroh? There should be some sort online scoring thing with this post. Is there a winner!

Anything to do with there being 'so many Americans in Chiang Mai'?

After spending time here and your surprised that businesses CAG (Come And Go) all the time? POH (Pictures Of Hamburgers) are not only for the expats as it's another HiSo (FIOY (Figure It Out Yourself)) fad here a la McDee's (McDonald's). But what really what get's me is my boys saw a BH (big hamburger) macot outside a restaurant on the moat the other day and after parking etc. we went in and they didn't even serve H (hamburgers)!

5555. Sorry about the abbreviations. I worked at The Pentagon, when I was a Uni student. It stays with you. UTH is Udon Thani. Every airport in the world has a three letter code with it..........As for LK, as one poster stated it's expensive, too. Even a couple of years back, there were still a few good happy hours. 40 thb tigers, good conversation......"Shock" people are the spike hair/nose ring people, who also tend to have prison tattoos.

What percent of beer consumed globally is poured over ice? Much less than 1%. It seems to me that it would kind of be looking down on the Thais to let them get away with that. "they don't understand refrigeration, we'll have to pour it over ice...." or "they don't know what cold means, just pour it over ice..." How many engineers reside here? Perhaps we can than our british allies for this catastrophe, because I know they serve at cellar temp, there........but that is a completely different kind of beer, and cellar temp here is 33c. I guess I'm going to have to start checking the digital thermometers....if it's over 3c, I'm going to bail. John's had the coolers on ice, and that is hard to beat, and a heck of a lot better than poor refrigeration.

1%? Do you get all your stats (statistics) from the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)? I live in Central America and where they drank cold beer over ice. BTW (By The Way) what's Uni? Or at least why is a good ole' American boy using that term??

In-keeping with the theme; how about MM leading onto T'non Ratwit to Zoe, UN, et al), or Warm yourself Up at Nim (Nimbleheadman) before seeing the Monkeys, then perhaps take in the Bazaar locale of Talad Anusan--strip with the odd-coloured Lion & nearby square for some Craic, albeit Canadian-style. You could even head up the Ping for a Good View of the Riverside. whistling.gif

There used to be "good conversation" on Loi Kroh road? Reminiscing the good old days when dirty old farangs used more refined language to discuss prostitutes are we?

The only thing worse than men who openly admit to hanging out with prostitutes, is men who think there are no other places for foreigners to socialise.

Cm is full of nice bars and restaurants, Loi Kroh is an abomination.

I couldn't be less interested in loi Kroh or it's "conversation" (ha!)

....but I think if I started to pontificate and damn others as inferior to myself I'd like some kind soul to point it out to me.

AnotherOneAmerican, I'm pointing it out.

Moon Muang soi 1 and 2, the beer is always cold at the pubs in this area and the prices stay reasonable.

Lost count of the times i have told waiters/waitresses not to pour my beer over ice when it's already been refrigerated. Just seems to pass from one generation of plicks to the next.!

and they don't start kindergarten until age 6 in El Salvador. 200+ visits to Mexico, No beer on ice, and they refer to the people from Central America as "Negritos." So let's be like Central America. What should we do first? Demolish all the schools? Or is your experience based on your week at the Blue Marlin. Beer has yeast in it, and what happens to yeast at room temp?

Congratulations you got through a post with out any one having to guess what you were talking about. As for demolishing the schools might as well they are closing a lot of them down. Nothing worse than seeing abandoned buildings that have all their windows broken out and a seedy dead looking exterior.

The cellar temp "beer" as you call it is ale. Beer as you call it (we call it lager, is always served cold!) Pouring beer over ice is just wrong on so many levels! I never understand Farang that say they have got used to it.

The head brewer of Harveys of Sussex said on Walking Through History that ale was the original brew without hops.

Tony Robinson tried a bottle and it sounded a bit sweet and strong like Special Brew which I used to drink 40 years ago at the Chelsea Potter.......yuk!

When hops were introduced in England it was called beer.

That's what the guy said, don't shoot the messenger.

Personally in a hot countries I think light beer should both be refrigerated AND be over ice. I also like to add a little soda for refreshment.

(ex landlord of pub in Germany where they serve EXCELLENT light beer called pils so not complete moron).
