Popular Post bobbin
Yes, after living here for more than 10 years, I can now buy made in Thailand Doritos Nacho Cheese or Extreme BarBQue chips. My snack of choice for more than 30 years was curiously absent from Lays local offerings. I have occasionally treated myself to imported Australian (okay) or American (best), but to be able to buy them in any 7/11 or Tescos is Nirvana. Potato chips (crisps to the Brits) were a poor substitute. The only problem is that the recipe has been slightly altered for Thai taste-buds. There is a very slight sweetness to the Nacho Cheese that is just not quite right. Extreme BarBQue will, I'm sure, be very spicy though. OMGImInPattaya
Nobody but you seems to care...maybe already resigned to the nori and tum yum goong flavors already. Edited June 1, 2013 by OMGImInPattaya
chuckd
I care. Thanks for the information. I will start looking for doritos and give them a try.
Popular Post marinediscoking
I too got excited when I saw them, but after trying them they are nothing like the original. They sell the original in small bags in Tops and central super market's.

Nowhereman60
They are also charging you prices as if they were imported from America.
bobbin
To clarify, for those not familiar, Doritos are nacho chips as the name would imply. That is, they are corn chips, cut in a triangular shape. Yes I care. Otherwise I would not have missed them so much.... The price is not quite as bad as imported. I have paid about 100 baht/192 gr. for the Australian and bought the American version in Villa for 190baht/192 gr. Here they are 28baht/88 gr. innovator
Taste like cardboard. Where's the cheese? Will not buy them again because my taste buds were expecting the US taste and not the bland, local attempt. I'm talking only about the Nacho Cheese, not the hot and spicy, since I don't like that at all.
blackman
bought one of each today in Big C extra 28 baht each or 44 baht for two bags huge savings huh? not tried yet will report back soon

BobTH
I tried them and also thought they tasted very different from the Doritos Nacho Cheese chips in the USA, I didn't really care for them and doubt that I purchase more. As far as potato chips here, I prefer the Original Flavoured "KOB KOB" brand. I used to work for a company that had a pipeline running through a LAY's facility where they made all the products, I once took a tour through it and ate a sample of each of the products off the conveyor as they were being made and still hot; Ummmm. You can find the real ones at high end grocery stores like the one at Paragon...but for an absurd price.
rixalex
I was quite excited like the OP when i spotted Doritos in the 7-11 a month or two back, at the price of about 30 baht for quite a big bag - usually i pay about 40 baht for a smaller imported bag from Tops - but my excitement quickly evaporated when i tasted them. Nothing like the imported version. The cheese ones are sweet and the bbq ones have a tangy taste, but not a plesant tangy. Back to the imports for me. Price wise not too much difference, just not quite as convenient as buying from 7-11.
thirteenalpha
Now all they need to get is a Taco Bell so I can get a Doritos Locos Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch Supreme Taco.

Emdog
Tastos for chips, getting harder to find as Lays is muscling them out of the racks. Would like to see original fritos here. Tastes like local fried insects!
bkk_mike
Lay's has a habit of doing this in Thailand. They introduced a locally made Salt and Vinegar crisp a few years ago (labelled as English Salt and Vinegar) but they obviously didn't use the UK recipe (or couldn't source proper vinegar cheaply enough) and they tasted nothing like Walkers (Lay's brand name in the UK). I don't know why they change a recipe that works. It annoys expats as it doesn't taste "right", and they poison the market for a proper release of the flavour after the Thai-style flavour fails. After all. McDonald's sells lots of Big Mac's and they taste the same everywhere. They leave the local specialisms to things on the menu that they don't sell in their home country. thirteenalpha
The USA ones are now made with GMO corn yummmmmmmmmmmmm Exactly. Yum. Why would genetically modified corn taste any different from non-genetically modified corn? Actually, it should be modified to taste better. Perhaps we aren't there yet, but we will be very soon. In the mean time we will just have to settle for increased yield and disease resistance so we can feed what seems like a new generation of kanom babies. BTW, isn't all corn genetically modified from it's ancestral corn over an incomprehensible number of years by environmental selection?

Sent from my GT-I9100T using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app I just tried the nacho dorito cheese and it was totally revolting. I managed to eat one and gave the bag away. Nacho cheese flavored Doritos are good in the USA. I can't believe how bad the Thai version is. Just disgusting! vomit!

The cheese flavoured snacks (not just Doritos) here are so un-cheesy they should even mention cheese flavour. As for spicy chips or crisps, for a country full of people that eat spicy food, their snacks are very bland. I've resorted to pouring chilli powder in the bag and giving it a shake just to get some decent heat on my chips!

You'd think of all places, they would be able to do it here, and it would surely go down a treat. Perhaps though, the manufacturers see these sorts of snacks as being primarily for young kids, who usually don't like things as hot as the adults. I guess there is truth in that. Whereas in the west crisps/chips are just as popular with adults as with kids, here i think adults tend to snack on other types of food. Probably not a bad thing as they aren't the most nutritious things in the world, are they.
BradinAsia
Folks who care about their health would do well to restrict their intake of all types of potato chips and corn chips. Limiting consumption to one serving per month is probably best. Many of the folks who sit around watching TV and munching on chips every day become obese and eventually have quadruple bass-pass surgery. Some healthy alternative which is also very tasty and satisfying -- assorted fresh fruit or fresh vegetables.

Extreme how? Knocked down by a bus or not, no reason to ever eat chips -- I don't eat even one bag in 5 years. Why ruin my health when so many natural tasty snacks available that are healthy? Why clog my arteries just to satisfy a bad habit? Just a matter of breaking bad habits and learning good ones. Also, no soft drinks. Drink 100% fruit/vegetable juice, or better yet, eat the whole fruit. And drink lots of plain water. Two beers at Christmas won't hurt, just to be sociable. No cigarettes ever. Life is much happier, more peaceful and relaxing when you know you're not poisoning your body. Edited June 2, 2013 by BradinAsia
