By English News

BANGKOK, June 4 – Militants may create violence in Thailand’s far South prior to the third round of peace talks between the Thai authorities and Muslim insurgent leaders on June 13, a Thai security official said today.

Paradorn Patanatabut, National Security Council (NSC) secretary general, said he believed the militants were monitoring the Thai government’s stance in the peace dialogues with Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) leaders.

“After the next round of peace talks, we should know which insurgent groups were responsible for attacks in the South,” he said. “The negotiations will be adjusted in accordance with recommendations from state agencies and civic groups.”

Lt Gen Paradon stood firm that he will lead the Thai security delegation for the dialogues in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur despite a verdict by the Administrative Court to reinstate Thawil Pliensri to the helm of the NSC.

Mr Thawil, transferred to an inactive post in September 2011, filed a lawsuit with the court seeking reinstatement. The government is considering appealing the verdict.

Gen Paradorn said a change in the top NSC position would be up to the prime minister and the government.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said he will make an inspection trip to the South on June 15 and southern authorities will from now on work in full force to maintain security in the South.

He insisted that peace talks with leading BRN members will continue but the government will set the topics so that the discussion is not too broad and does not take too long.

“We have learned that BRN leaders felt pressured by the Malaysian government if the peace talks fail,” Mr Chalerm said. (MCOT online news)

By English News

BANGKOK, June 4 – Thai police raided a house in suburban Bangkok and arrested a man today on charge of drug trafficking after a manhunt of nearly six years.

Narcotics Control Board police apprehended Chatri (alias Ban) Sridit at a house-turned-office of Patrin Logistics Co in Nong Chok district and seized a number of vehicles including 12 trucks believed used to transport drugs, and a title deed for a tract of land worth more than Bt100 million in total.

The three-storey house is located on land of more than two rai (about 1 acre), police said.

Police said the suspect had been on an arrest warrant since July 9, 2007, on charges of methamphetamine trafficking. A search at his residence in 2006 found 9,000 meth pills in his possession but Mr Chatri escaped.

According to evidence, the suspect smuggled meth pills from the North and distributed them to various communities in Bangkok including Klong Toey, Rom Klao and Suwintawong, police said.

In 2007, police arrested Mr Chatri’s colleague, identified as Sanan Sae-Ung, and seized 11,000 meth pills. Mr Chatri fled the scene. (MCOT online news)

Rainmaking process accelerated to prevent water shortage late this year

BANGKOK, 4 June 2013 (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is speeding up royal rainmaking operations to ensure sufficient water supply all year round as the water levels in many reservoirs are quite low at present.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, even though the water levels in reservoirs and dams across the country are currently enough for use in agriculture and household consumption, they are considered lower than the appropriate levels. Concerns have been raised that water shortages would occur when the dry season arrives later in the year.

Such concerns have prompted the ministry to put the artificial rainmaking process into high gear in a bid to raise the water levels in the reservoirs.

In parallel, a water management plan will be incorporated into the ministry’s policy aimed at protecting farmland from natural disasters and minimizing damages during the second half of this year.
