BANGKOK, June 4 – Thailand will introduce eco-tourism on many of the country’s islands to attract more foreign visitors, the tourism and sports minister said today.

Somsak Purisrisak said the government will encourage Thai investors to adopt an environmental conservation system at tourist-favoured islands to tap high-end overseas tourists – the way the Maldives government has been doing.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said during her visit to the island nation over the weekend that Thailand should follow the Maldives with more emphasis on cleanliness, environment and safety for tourists on most of the kingdom’s islands.

Thailand should follow the Maldives’ step in tourism promotion, she reportedly said.

Mr Somsak said the ministry will expand the eco-tourism concept in the country given the success of “green island” in some southern Thai islands.

Foreign tourists to Thailand should reach 25 million visitors, generating Bt1.6 trillion revenue this year, he said, adding that the government projected an increase to Bt2 trillion in 2015. (MCOT online news)

oh well the big difference is price in Maldives for a room cost 4 or 5 times the hotel price in Thailand ... Not sure Thailand can offer the same clear water , white sand beaches .

Thailand does seem to have started on the right path by emulating the flooding, isn't The Maldives supposed to disappear under water within 100 years, seems like a good model to adopt.

The Maldives' beach resorts are far more expensive than Thailand's beach resorts, and for good reason. Pristine beaches, quality service and great memories are what most people take home rather than broken bones, images of litter and a feeling of having been duped.

Personally, I love Thailand and I think the hotels and resorts are good value, but The Maldives is in another completely different league.

does the model include that the beaches of the Maldives will be below sea level before the end of this century (or earlier?)

First step is get rid of all the food stalls on the beaches, the massage huts, the dodgy jet ski operators, the sun bed mafia, the mafia disguised as policemen......

No it doesn't, because they won't.
