Rubber tapper shot dead in Narathiwat ahead of tomorrow's peace talks.
By Digital Media

NARATHIWAT, June 12 - A rubber tapper was shot dead in this restive southern province just one day before the third round of peace talks between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) militant group.

The victim was identified as Jehmansoh Yeemayee, 32. His bullet-riddled body was found on a road in Sukhirin district this morning.

Initial investigation found the victim was riding his motorbike on his way to work at a rubber plantation when two gunmen, also on a motorbike, opened fire at him.

Police said the attack could be both politically motivated and / or a personal conflict.

In Khok Pho district of Pattani province, two military personnel were wounded in a bomb ambush of a teacher-protection unit.

The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 commander Lt Gen Sakol Chuen Trakool has ordered security beef-up in the region following a report of possible violence ahead of the Thursday peace dialogue between Thai officials and the BRN in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. .

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat suggested that the Thai representatives should demand the BRN movement to stop insurgent attacks during the upcoming Ramadan holy month.

The minister said the ceasefire during Ramadan was earlier urged by Muslims living in the deep South and it is now time for the Thai officials to raise their demand to the BRN after the group had earlier set their conditions.

Marshal Sukumpol also said he would visit the violence-plagued region at the end of this month to follow up the government's operations in the area. (MCOT online news).

BANGKOK: -- A Thai appeals court upheld a 15-year prison term on Wednesday for a political activist found guilty of lese majesty four years ago.

The court upheld a criminal court conviction of Daranee Charnchoensilpakul, 50, on three counts of lese majesty in a public speech she delivered at a political rally in 2008.

"She has set a bad example for other people," the court said. Daranee, better known by her nickname Da Torpedo for her fiery political oratory, said she would appeal to the Supreme Court.

"I want my case to get as much public exposure as possible," she said.

No PM's comment on Cabinet reshuffle
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declined to comment whether Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom would be included in the new list of ministers.

Boonsong is expected to lose his job following the reported huge loss of the rice-pledging scheme.

Asked to confirm this, Yingluck said "I’d rather keep quiet on this". She noted that much of the issue at hand depends on the compilation of the loss figures from PM’s Office Minister Varathep Rattanakorn.
