Yes, but alas, his job was done and he went back to the UK.

When did he go back?

Could he described as a Hero of Thailand?

Thai heros don't necessary have to be Thai I suppose.

EDIT ... mrtoad and I posted at the same time.

A real life hero.

Was he a Charitable Chap?

All the hero's are in Thai soaps. They are the ones that pull a gun in every episode or beat up women at will; yet still all the women want to fall at their feet. Why?.....'because he hansum' !!

Nang Sua does the beating, don't annoy her.

I thought Thaksin was a hero for the rural folks in northern Thailand. I'm not going to comment on the whys or wherefores, or rights and wrongs.

last i checked, spiderman, batman and crew were doing a roaring trade in thailand.

littlest pony and barbie aren't doing badly either.

not to mention the popularity of anime and manga

Thaksin is a hero to many rural Thai's as many of his programs enacted while he was in power made life better for the poor in Thailand.

I see him as a good politician that saw the needs of the poor and working class in Thailand, and took advantage of that need to set up a political machine that is still effective today.

Thaksin used Thailand's money to set up his political machine, his true colors came out when he refused to pay taxes on the sale of his satellite network. His downfall was his unwillingness to pay his fair share of taxes on that sale of 10's of billions of baht that could have aided the people of Thailand.

His message has not been lost on the voting public and the opposition has failed to address the needs of the working class and the poor, only result's in Thailand's political turmoil!

Agreed. It actually amazed me that Thaksin wasn't smart enough to just follow the tax laws. He had more money than he could ever spend in any case. He is and was a megalomaniac and thought he was above the law.

Why focus on comic book heroes, real life ones are more interesting.

Courage under fire: Learning from a real Thai hero

Many stories have been told of heroism during World War II. The bold and courageous action of Oskar Schindler, who saved 1,200 lives, was the basis of a novel and blockbuster movie, Schindler’s List, which won seven Oscars including Best Picture in 1994. Irena Sendler, a Polish nurse, is also praised as a heroine who smuggled 2,500 children to save them from the Holocaust.

In Thailand, there is a local hero who dared to risk his life and his family fortune to save the lives of numbers of Allied prisoners of war. It is estimated that at least 12,000 Allied PoWs died during almost three years, from late 1942 to August 1945, building the infamous Death Railway for the occupying Japanese. But many more would have perished had Boonpong Sirivejjabhandu not risen to the occasion.

May have been a PR mistake but in fact the laws from the very beginning of setting up the stock exchange exempted all profits from stock transactions from any tax at all, people did get upset about it, selling key infrastructure to foreigners as well, but he didn't make any legal mistake there at all.

Not saying he's Mr Clean just clarifying that particular issue.

And aren't we supposed to avoid such discussion in General?
