Myanmar turns down Thai request for white elephant

Featured Replies

This is proof that the stupid craze for Thai white skin goes way back.

Now they will have to apply whitening cream to Thai elephants.

Compared to the two little pinkies in the tub, the Thai elephant looks a bit whiter.

Could be grey and covered in head to toe in baby powder.

Would they do that? Really?wink.png

I'll bet the real reason the Burmese won't let it go, is because of their superstitions. Especially considering the fanfare here and the celebrations that were all over the front pages of the newspapers. Far too auspicious.

So Thailand has more white elephants than Myanmar, but still wants to borrow one from them!?

Is the one in Myanmar more real/whiter? Just asking.

Thai's will steal all its semen.

Do they have a navy?

I've got a transparent elephant that I could sell to Thai officials for a few million baht.

The place where this white elephant and others are displayed in Myanmar is free to go to. So, keeping it is not a commercial decision. Pure slap in the face.

It says here Thailand has 10 of them already, why stress the poor animal out transporting it to Chaing Mai?

Thai ones are a copy.

Fake white masks?

.

Hasn't Thailand already have it's very own, self generated WHITE ELEPHANT

... named the 'Rice Pledging Scheme?

.

Guess the zoo and its hi so backers wont be making any extra cash from tickets to see the elephant.

If they put TS in a cage I would be happy to pay to see it.

Myanmar...White Elephant...Thailand....but of course one brainiac couldn't keep Thaksin out of this!

Congratulations!

Rama V sent an emissary to London in the latter part of the 19th century. The emissary returned and reported that 'The Great White Queen' was undoubtedly a descendant of the Great White Elephant. I bet that went down well in Buck House.

They are sleeping in all those used German subs Thailand bought.

Surapong should never have made his requests public, he was trying to look like a smart ass in front of everyone and now it has led to an awkward if not embarrasing rebuttal from Myanmar. This is what happens when you put non diplomats in diplomatic positions.

I prefer the truth. Ability to be honest is not a desirable element in a diplomat.wai2.gif

For a people that "saving face", is so important, this was a big mistake. Kind of silly, wanting to borrow a white elephant, and turn it into a money making machine. Do Thai's ever think of anything, except money? If Thailand actually did some work, to help Myanmar get back on its feet, it would be better for all.

How about exchanging the 4444, for the white elephant?

Yeah its to difficult, like Thailand is a million miles away from Buma isn't it..

I think the Burmese expect the elephant to be treated like other burmese workers in Los.

Out in the sun all day, comes back darker than stevie wonder.

Rubbish!

Why don't they just call Thai customs? They know people who do this sort of thing all the time.

Wow !!!!!! Nice one... :-) I agree, if you want the job

done right, may as well call in the pros.

"Unlike many of Myanmar's white elephants, most of those in Thailand are not albinos, but have pale skin and other characteristics, such as fair eyelashes and toenails."

Yeah its to difficult, like Thailand is a million miles away from Buma isn't it..

Oh yes. Like they would give their falsely superior neighbour a symbolic national treasure to make money out of?

I haven't seen the crown jewels in the Louvre in exchange for the Mona Lisa recently.

The Burmese are apparently not going to be lackeys to Thai governmental whims.

Anyone want to fund an industrial estate in nakorn bythesaeporn?

the burmese know if they lent it to thailand ,the police would ,say the elephant,is claiming political asylem cos its a rohinga elephant, never get it back,,,,,
