samran
Hi all, Am about the delve into the world of internet TV and streaming channels from back in the old country (via proxies etc). Taking into account the vagaries of the interweb in Thailand, what do people recommend as the download speed needed so there isn't the ongoing issue of drop outs or buffering? From what I've been told by friends, True seems to be the best provider for metro BKK?
sammycic
FWIW I believe the best solution is torrents or file sharing. Watch what you want, when you want in full HD. UK, AUS, US if its on tv you will find it to download.
joeaverage
i would agree. your ability to stream depends really on your ability to buffer, or to adjust said buffer, but a steady 3mb down is a pretty fair minimum. you will also find yourself at the mercy of proxy or vpn traffic, or in the case of a vpn limited by the headroom needed for compression and or encryption. my solution is a 30/3 mbps connection and a seedbox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seedbox, i then download using a multi segment or multi thread ftp client like cute ftp pro or smart ftp pro. if you find a decent private tracker you can dowload a 4 GB movie to the seedbox in minutes and using ftp client download the move to you local machine in about a half hour at your maximum or near maximum connection speed. As you know, even with a 30 mbps internet connection, speeds through the international gateway are limited to about 3mbps - per connection. With multi-threaded, or multi-segment ftp, you can stack 20+ connections, thereby maxing out your own connection speed. i chucked my true platinum package about 3 years ago, and the price of the seedbox plus the price of the internet connection come to about the same amount of money as i spent on cable. the benefit is when i turn on my tv, i know exactly what i am going to watch and don't surf channels while staring vacantly at the box. the other benfit is i already need the web for my living, so the fact that it provides entertainment too is just a bonus Edited June 21, 2013 by joeaverage
lomatopo
There have been quite a few great threads re: live streaming with first-hand experiences with both content providers and local ISPs. https://www.google.com/search?q=live+tv+streaming+site%3Athaivisa.com&oq=live+tv+streaming+site%3Athaivisa.com&aqs=chrome.0.57.11589j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 There are probably too many variables to consider, but many seemed to have positive experiences with True Online DOCSIS. http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-internet-docsis/entry/1524 http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-internet-docsis/entry/1160

I paid afl tv 120 dollars for a full live season of viewing, great value if you have the speed. I cant watch at home on computer but pop down to internet cafe for those games not on australia network.
