What can I do about child abuse in Thailand - zero, but where it has happened in front of me i.e. a severe beating, I did intervene & took the child to receive medical care. The doctor said if it happenned again for me to contact her & she would call the police. A very small contribution...

No punt intended, but a child once beaten is not enough for the doctor to take action ????

Who gets the right to say whether a person is being exploited or not.

Over the years I have seen many folks begging on the streets and many of them weren't from (or within) these shores. They're just folks trying to eke an existence with the hand that fate has dealt them. In western countries most don't need the hand-out because they're on welfare and/or just can't be bothered to hold down a job.

Here there are many reasons for the variations of these peoples plight and the majority are doing it to support their family rather than just themselves. There's no welfare here..

Sadly some are exploited by gangs who demand their percentage of the take. They have little choice but their devotion to their families is laudible.

If their access to a funding stream was removed. What income would they have?

Before having a system where any self appointed arbiter can dictate whether some-one is exploited or not. It may be better to campaign for a system where these folks can have access to something like welfare.

But, perhaps that wouldn't have the same self righteous fascination.

So Scott made an appointment with a high-ranking policeman, and literally throwing wads of hard cash onto the negotiating table, asked what could be done? So the police negotiated some deal with the mafia gang (for a price) and all was arranged. The 3 children were handed over into the tender loving care of the couple. Sadly one of the girl’s was so mentally disturbed and uncontrollable that she had to be returned to the mafia gang, but the other 2 children, although it was extremely hard work, eventually began to settle down with Scott and his wife as a family, and as far as I know, they all lived happily ever after.

Footnote - these particular starfish were saved, but as a result - their profitable purchase price from the mafia gang (really separate from the police, you think?) paid for another group to be abducted/purchased from wherever they came from an put to work out in exactly the same territory as before, few more starfish tossed up on the beach.

A great and noble sacrifice by your friend, yet no less net suffering in the world.

Just sayin', life goes on.
