BANGKOK, July 2 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's move to take the concurrent post of defence minister will lead to prompt decisions in tackling the southern unrest, according to a senior security officer.

Charoon Ampa, adviser to the National Security Council (NSC), said the southern situation should improve with direct and up-to-the-minute orders by the prime minister/defence minister.

Ms Yingluck has become the first female defence minister in Thailand’s history following the latest cabinet reshuffle which took effect Sunday.

Col Charoon said the Thai security forces will reply to the seven demands proposed by militant group Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) after the fasting month of Ramadan ends on August 7.

“We are studying if it is possible to follow the demands, but we definitely disagree with withdrawal of military troops from the far South,” he said.

“The local administration may be assigned to take over security mission from the military if the situation improves. The Interior Ministry must be 90 per cent ready for the job.”

Tanathip Sawangsaeng, Defence Ministry spokesman, said all agencies responsible for peacekeeping in the South expressed condolence to the families of the eight soldiers who died in a militant attack in Krong Pinang district of Yala on Sunday.

He said 816 newly-recruited police will be dispatched to the South soon to provide security to southern people and assist in educational development projects.

He said personnel of the Internal Security Operation Command will be on special alert during the holy month of Ramadan, July 9 to August 7, and provide conveniences to Thai Muslims leaving their homes to go to mosques for religious ceremonies. (MCOT online news)

Since Yingluck won't be "meddling" in defence issues, decisions CAN be made much faster.

This move will be as useful as that ludicrous signing ceremony between her and the pushy muslim insurgent faction leaders who have since made a mockery of the whole show.

It has temporary PR value only.

With her political and diplomatic experience and talent she is a liability at best. Why some journalists still insist on attesting her some fancy capabilities is a mystery to me, especially with her record of past political blunders. As the German proverb says "Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt" - Hope is the last to die.

More complete nonsense from a government clutching at straws with failure after failure and that includes their woeful PR.

All she'll do is call security council meetings that she won't attend.

According to the OP Thai authortities will respond to the BRN demands after Ramadan ends on August 7. This is in direct contradiction of the June 26th statement by Lt Gen Paradorn from the NSC who said Thai authorities would take three to four days to respond to Malaysia on how many points of the BRN’s seven conditions the Thai government could accept. As per usual Thai spokespeople continually making conflicting statements.

In a country with an active, responsible press and proper diplomatic accountability this rubbish would be ridiculed as would the people saying it and the people about whom it's said.

Here it's just par for the course as the average Thai isn't interested in politics until it comes to their pocket.

Is she telling the country, that because the person she put in charge of the problem did nothing, except take ear medication, she has to take over. This does not shine a good light of the former cabinet. coffee1.gif

Which cabinet was that? She's had a few.

I'm certainly no Maggie fan but I think that's a bit of an insult. Maggie did at least stand for election and made all her own decisions. Her foreign trips were more than just photo ops as well.

Words fail me.

She can do what her brother did in the south. Kill 'em all and let God sort it out. And in the mean time she can kill off her opponents and claim they were insurgents, just like Taksin and the drug problem in the south years ago..

I'm sure Yingluck will have the Southern unrest under control in no time, being the outspoken and decisive leader she is..... no, wait blink.png

Charoon Ampa, adviser to the National Security Council (NSC) must have been high on something when he released that statement.

I'll wager that Yingluck will never visit the affected areas in the south, so how can she give an informed decision.

I seem to remember many years ago, her big brother Thaksin stating that he would go down south and sort out the problem in a couple of weeks and stay in a tent if necessary..cheesy.gif

I see she is off on another trip with her deputy, no doubt to look into defense measures.

This week, Phongthep will accompany Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to Poland and Turkey.

Actually I believe she could make a big difference by reaching out to the people personally rather than just showing a militarily presence. Get the people on her side and they will stop protecting the identity of the terrorists. Most of them are sick of it now but the Government has shown nothing but the Military and in the back of there minds that is just if not more unacceptable to them than the Terrorists.

Also an admittance that her brother's policy that led to Tak Bai was unjustified and inhuman.
