Report Flood Alert Issued in Phuket as Canal Levels Rise
Photo via The Nation In Phuket today, Friday, 22 August, officials issued a flood warning due to persistent heavy rain and high tides that threaten to overwhelm the Bang Yai Canal. Water levels have surged dramatically, causing concern among local authorities and residents alike. Phuket City Mayor, Suphachok Laongphet, conducted an inspection of the Bang Yai Canal earlier today. During his visit, he stressed the importance of constant vigilance at key pumping stations. Mayor Suphachok has directed officials to respond swiftly to any potential overflow, ensuring the safety of communities in the area. Reports at 8:57 am indicated a significant rise in canal levels, compounded by the incoming tide. Local officials have alerted communities nearby to the threat of flooding should the rain persist. Residents along the canal have been advised to relocate their belongings to higher ground and stay tuned for updates from the Phuket City Municipality. For those affected by the flooding within the city municipality area, assistance is available via the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department’s hotline at 199. The weather situation remains precarious throughout southern Thailand, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). Continued heavy rain is forecasted in Phuket and other west coast provinces, such as Ranong and Phang Nga. The TMD has predicted that 60% of Phuket may experience thunderstorms, with sea waves potentially reaching up to 2 metres in storm-affected areas. The current weather conditions are attributed to a moderate southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea and a low-pressure area over northern Laos and Vietnam. Due to these conditions, 41 provinces, including Bangkok, are on alert for heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. In addition to the flood warning, Phuket recently hosted a delegation of Chinese film officials from Hainan Province. The visit, led by Chen Jiyang, Deputy Minister of Public Relations and Secretary-General of the Hainan International Film Festival, was aimed at exploring the island's potential as a major filming location. During their four-day visit, the delegation toured iconic sites such as Baan Chinpracha, Phuket Old Town, and scenic coastal areas. Meetings were held with officials from Thailand’s Ministry of Culture and media representatives to foster cultural cooperation and strengthen film partnerships between Thailand and China. As the situation develops, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and preparedness of Phuket's residents. Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns closely, ready to act swiftly should conditions worsen. With the community on high alert, the hope is to effectively manage any challenges posed by the severe weather and minimize its impact on daily life. I am curious where you got your information. Because the Maine police website says that reserve officers are volunteers and may help in the office or assist real policemen. And this story says he was a reserve officer. Also to make a point, if he was trying to buy a gun and was a real police officer, he would not need to be trying to buy it. He would have either bought one already or been issued a gun with his station. So your post makes no sense at all. -
