Saw 1 on the 107 yesterday, i noticed his lack of driving skills also.

I see your point about Thai tax payers money. I just did a quick google search. Here's what i found for the model i saw: BMW 535i (Thailand retail price of THB 7,599,000)

But probably >5M of that 7.6M baht is tax and government vehicles might not be subject to that tax.

Not unusual in the states to see police using sports cars etc. on the highways. Confiscated autos from drug dealers. No cost to the taxpayer thank you..

High level politicians and members of the Royal Family here are entitled to a police escort which is provided by a special section. They are nice shiny cars. I think the number of cars depends on rank and they are also aided by other locally provided escort police cars.

You mean like this one

1. Some of these are Royal escort cars, ie only to escort the king or family

2. Police does not buy it, its "donated"

I don't know the situation currently, but about 10 years ago there were 2 police departments in Bangkok from which one used BMW 5 series and the other Mercedes, complete with red plates and department id number painted on the side.

Seen them a few times in Pattaya in that period, when they arrived with a fleet of at least 10 cars.

Royal escort is part of police department, they are better dressed, better looking and more fit. They do not work traffic or anything else but escort, i am sure it is them.

But anyhow, these cars are donated. Just as 10 Honda CBR150 were donated to Pattaya Police recently,

Thai numbers let them hide double pricing.

The 535 is a fair bit less than 7.99 MB... About 2-3 MB less in fact. Added to which I'm sure that even if the vehicles were not donated the tax wouldn't be included for the RTP.

These cars, whether BMW, Merc, Camry, Accird etc are a much better Police vehicle than those awful pickups...

Even if these vehicles were purchased with tax payers money, it's a drop in the ocean.

Could there be a little jealousy against those who get to drive nice cars? Just askin'

There are much bigger fish to fry if we are going to wave the 'Wasting the Tax Payers Money' flag...

Where I come from it would seem the police cars were pretty much standard through out the department in each area.

what is the normal police car in Chiang Mai.

I believe one of the royal family is to be in town some time this week.

I believe the Prince will be visiting Doi Saket temple and I heard he's also awarding diplomas at Rajabaht Uni this week.

When I used to live in Hua Hin and when the The King and Queen were in residence whenever their Royal Procession would drive around the road would be closed for a few min. and the everyone would have to stop and turn off their car lights. I would pass the time by counting the number of vehicles they had. The King always had the most usually around 38, the Queen high 20's and others less with The Princess in the high teens. This included lots of different police and an ambulance and vans. The Royals drove in custom colored cream Mercedes Benzs.

I remember in the past being told by police to dismount my motorbike and stand to attention as I waited for royal motorcades to pass. Of course, I didn't think, say or do anything negative. That would be illegal.

However, when Thaksin's motorcade passed me as I was riding my bicycle along Highway 121 many years ago, I gave the police cars honking their horns at me to get out of their way the middle finger. It was stupid but felt incredibly good. This isn't illegal.

Both police and military use their own license plates. They're different, but both use Thai numbers.

The Prince is in town, so quite a few escort vehicles around. And the usual convoys, road blocks, etc.

I saw one on Changklang Road last week. The one I saw had Police marking and electronic top flashbar and on the doors it was written "POLICE REGION 5" in large letters.
