Nearly 14,000 posts since 2006 vs about 3,700 since 2004 says it all re: who has most spare time.

Sooner or later the issue of post count comes up. Judging by your posts I'd say you have the most spare time.

You would, of course.

Here's an example where statistics can lie. Have you heard of the guy who drowned crossing a river with an average depth of 12 inches?

If you investigated deeply you'd find that my post count over the last 2 years is very limited and has declined sharply, and it's limited to a few threads. I would bet yours is far higher at this point in time.

(I'm surprised I even had time to send this reply as a super typhoon has just hit our family home in the Philippines)

That was fine, fine tap dancin'. Nor would I have expected less. Enjoyed that, thank you. smile.png

Both comments were factual, although they'd be hard to prove, as is most of the tripe you post.

What are you disputing?

To counter your ignorance, delusion, and misinformation on this particular point, acquired from birth, with the truth acquired by education, research, and science.

So then, with better information, members interested in losing weight, notably the obese and near-obese, might lose weight quickly and relatively painlessly without need to get into your hair shirt. That is, without worrying so much about calorie-counting at every meal, eating counterproductive carbs, going hungry, and uselessly busting their butts in the gym, pedaling furiously on an exercise bike smile.png, and risking injury.

Then they also have not so much a diet but a lifestyle in which their weight loss can more likely be maintained. The success rate of your method is very well known. smile.png

If you read only one, he'll do admirably. Of course there have been many researchers working on the low-carb field. If you wanted to pick a starting point, you could go back to William Banting in 1862. In fact, over the course of my posts here and there on this general topic I've given references to various sources.

But in your case, since you won't read anything contrary anyway, what does it matter which of many I chose to quote? What point in giving you a list of others?

But tropo = Il Tropo (Jane Brody). We got that. smile.png

NO, you're a Gary Taubes fanboy and that's about as far as it goes. We can find hundreds of articles from him and his videos on YouTube. At least he doesn't insult people he's trying to educate. You're not doing him any favours.

I haven't read all the thread, but my two cents worth from personal experience.

I have been carrying way too much weight since being here for almost 6 years and living a sedentary lifestyle. Tipping in at 96 Kgs and a 40 inch waist from years and years of business lunches and dinners I finally decided it was all getting too much and I longed for the trim extremely fit me that used to exist when I was in the Military. That figure seemed long gone. Then.......on Jun 3rd I downloaded and watched a video called 'Fat Sick and Nearly Dead', quite brilliant about a successful Ozzy Trader who filmed himself on a 60 day fresh fruit and veg juice fast. The next morning on June 4th I started. I did 45 days on nothing but fruit and veg juice, 5 big 16 oz glasses per day. I was never hungry once apart from head hunger I created by imagining favourite foods. No solids past my lips for 45 days and after 5 days I had never had so much energy in years. I lost 12 kg's in that 45 days. From then I was just careful what I was eating and importantly I was now off the beer! 60 days ago i was at about a 14kg weight loss and I then started a physical training program called P90. This is the precursor to a pretty intense training program called P90X. I have been doing P90 religiously now for 60 days. You do one day cardio, one day weights, 6 days a week with a 1 day rest. about 45 mins per day. It is easy to do, put the video on your TV watch it on your ipad or iphone, you can do it in your hotel room when away, no excuses!

Today I am now at a 21 Kg weight loss. My waist is 32 inch. I can see my ribs and abs for the first time in I cant remember how long. I can go to the park now and run round and round for a couple of miles and be barely out of breath, 6 months ago I used to break out in a sweat walking round. I am eating right, good fresh food which is plentiful in Thailand, no Junk food, no coke and crap sugar drinks and no beer and I feel 10 years younger, and to be brutally honest, when I look in the mirror now, I look 10 years younger as well.

I am hooked now and what they say about the power of endorphines is true, i just cannot bear to miss doing my exercise everyday and I am in the routine. I take whey protein supplement in a shake each day to help recovery after training and it is working a treat. The only drawback is I look like a tramp when I am dressed as everything is too big for me LoL. I have dug out all my old clothes and will buy a complete new wardrobe when I get to my goal of a 30 inch waist which will be soon. I have found that doing lost of weights is really burning the fat off and I am really enjoying it. In 30 days I start/graduate to the P90X and I will be ready for it. I can't wait, it is intense and will drastically improve my overall fitness and well being. The cool thing is that doing all this I can eat what I want and I dont feel guilty about breaking the planned food program and having a fresh pizza with the kids or some cake and ice cream. If you are active and generally watch what you eat and balance it out, there is no problem with being naughty now and again and wolfing down one of your favourite chocolate cakes.

The only way is hard work, but everyone can do it. Pills and fads wont cut it, there is no easy way. The juice fasting is awesome and rejuvenates your body/detoxes it as well, but if you go back to your old ways after that you will just put it all back on. The juicing changed my life and the exercise and healthy eating has given me my old life/level of fitness back.

So, download the video or watch it somewhere on line, it will be the best 1hr 30 you spend. Then do it, after that download P90 and get stuck in, you will be horrified how unfit you are at the start and amazed how fit you are at 60 days plus.

Good luck.........Bring it on!

Great story.

You cant beat fresh veggie juices for restoring the body.

I prefer this sort of approach to weight management rather than just restricting carbs.

Your exercise program is a little intense for me but hey you are probably a lot younger.

My body wont stand six days a week and quite frankly I would be bored having to keep up that sort of training regime.

I am 53, now feel 43 and the thing with exercise is just do what you can, just do some! Even just walking at a brisk pace for 30-45 mins per day is so good for you. I just think now that 45 mins per day to invest in my own personal insurance policy is worth it, and I was the worlds number 1 procrastinator, I built a house with a fully equipped gym in it for Gods sake, and found every excuse I could not to use it. The Gym was like the Carlsberg complaints office, nobody ever went in there. Glad to say it's all different now.

The juicing was awesome and you are right it is great for the body and mind.

Good luck with your own path.

At the moment am playing squash three times a week and doing one weight session and a couple of yoga sessions a week.

I cant do too much as I have been playing squash for over thirty years now on top of doing regular weight work outs.

I will be back in Thailand for an extended period next month so will start doing three or four weight session a week and that will do me.

I was a big fresh veggie juice drinker for many year my favourite carrot celery and beetroot but I haven't been doing juicing for the last 5 years or so.

I should start again. I need to buy one of those cold pressed machines for best results.

I also saw the movie ... the guy Phil in the movie was much more inspirational.

I lost 12+kg in about 6 months by changed what I put into my body and when. I cut out fast food, pizza, fried chicken and such. Also changed when I eat by limiting what I eat in the evening. Now I eat very little or none at night time.

I also "juice" but in moderation. I drink 1/2 green apple + 1/2 carrot juice every day and sip green apple + ginger juice in the morning and evening. I attribute this to not catching cold this year. Most of time, I have either fruit juice or vegi juice made that I drink as well. I just buy whatever I think looks good at the grocery store.

I don't think I do it conscientiously but I also cut out a lot of carbs (less rice, break and potatoes). I think this makes "hunger" much easier to manage.

Now I need to work on getting this thinner body into shape by working out.

I also saw the movie. It was interesting. I considered trying the juicing thing myself for about 5 minutes. I don't think it's a realistic OR desirable option for the vast majority of humanity.

Anyway, this article might be of interest:

Stop Juicing
It’s not healthy, it’s not virtuous, and it makes you seem like a jerk.

What issues do you have with the content of the article? I haven't really focused time on it yet. I would never go on a juicing program myself as I think it's really extreme and I don't favor extremist programs. Just saying it's stupid is pretty weak and says nothing.

This quote from the link, I definitely do endorse.

The problem with this way of thinking is that food and weight are not matters of morality.

My Fitness and "Weight Management" progress - 4th Month -
My first participation in the Bangkok Mini-Marathon (10km), and it's a nice feeling when after only 3km you start overpassing runners who are 20 years younger than you , but also to see that runners who are 20 years older than you, are still running next to you when you cross the finish line.
I'm only half-way in my "Weight Management" journey, still 8-10kg to dispose, so I raise the target for next year: half-marathon (21km) in less than 2Hours.
Still have the occasional social dinners that can affect the overall program, but it's now much easier to get back on track.
Question:
  • How to best motivate a friend to seriously do something about his fitness level?

Friend has a BMI over 30, in his mid 30 and really do enjoy lunch buffet. Midly active, he got recent knee injury while practicing sport.

After the knee recover, I'd like to assist/encourage him in his own journey.

Any tips?

So, why post a link that ridicules people who are juicing/ drinking juice?

just saw the diagrams and clap2.gif

Done well.....

For your running....if you feel anything wrong in your legs or knee, brake for 1-2 weeks. If you are too successful and overdo it, you can get nasty things that need a long time to get better. But if stop before and do 1-2 weeks swimming for a brake just no problem will start.

Your friend....it depends on what he likes. Swimming is good but boring.....fitness studio, lifting weights, bicycle?

I've been struggling with low energy for years... just couldn't solve it... so I have to give a shout out to juicing....

It has totally solved the problem. My energy levels have tripled.

I don't juice fast. I just eat normally and supplement with 500 ml of juice daily. I'm not doing it for fat loss.

In the last 2 weeks I've lost another kilogram.

Down from 90Kg last year to 78.3Kg 2 weeks ago and now 77.5Kg.

I'll have to start asking for advice on how to gain weight soon!

Or stop the exercise for a while.

That's great. Best wishes on your struggle to MAINTAIN that weight loss. I hope you're joking about needing to gain weight, it would be silly to go that far.

I love to hear stories about fresh veggie juices and revitalising health.

A lot of the benefit of live juices is the enzymes that you get from the juices.

They should be part of everyones diet.

I love to hear stories about fresh veggie juices and revitalising health.

A lot of the benefit of live juices is the enzymes that you get from the juices.

They should be part of everyones diet.

I have only one slight concern. Due to the tediousness of juicing about 12 different veges I make a litre at a time and then refrigerate half to drink the next day.

There's different theories about this, but I don't taste any difference and it doesn't look any different. There's always lemon and lime juice in the mix.

At lease half of the juice is from green leafy vegetables. I think we're in leafy vegetable heaven here in Thailand as there is such a huge assortment of them. I just grab bunches of all different types and juice them. One time a chose badly - I think it was Thai parsley. That's was just too pungent.

I guess I see it's benefit in getting a good daily dose of the green leafy vegetables which is indeed a fantastically good thing to do for yourself. I love and crave these vegetables but it is rather a burden to get a good fix everyday in cooked recipes, whether at home or eating out (and the recipes usually involve added fats). For fruit, I'm definitely into eating the whole fruit. That said I recently read that eating orange PEELS is beneficial which you would not eat normally but you CAN throw the whole orange with peel in a juicer!

with Orange peels I would be extreme careful. Often the oranges are sprayed with chemicals which are extreme harmful if eaten. And not all that is sold as organic is organic.

-->question of trust.

I thought people who are into juicing would find it interesting. Don't make more of that than it is and if you're looking for a pissing contest, no thank you.

I've been struggling with low energy for years... just couldn't solve it... so I have to give a shout out to juicing....

The placebo effect can be very powerful and beneficial. If it works, do it.

Any tips?

For your running....if you feel anything wrong in your legs or knee

Just a matter of time. Long distance runnin' (since most of it is done on asphalt/concrete) ain't worth it. Trust me. Hello-o-o orthopedist!

Your friend....it depends on what he likes. Swimming is good but boring.....fitness studio, lifting weights, bicycle?

Moderate exercise is always good but it can wait, if need be, until he gets his weight under control. Just getting into a gym and doing something without too much stress might start him on the road. Maybe do one circuit of one easy set per machine, and a bit of cardio w/o feeling he has to bust his butt and get injured again. But he may just get discouraged, and eat more anyway, as exercise tends to make you hungrier and your body wants to make for the calories lost and then some. smile.png

Best thing is to start changing his mental attitude. So first he should get educated on the low carb diet, fastest, easiest way to lose weight. He surely knows the outdated "calories in/calories out" hairshirt theory and obviously it hasn't worked for him and won't, as it doesn't for most people. He's not gonna bother w/ all that calorie counting at every meal, worrying about pulling the skin off his chicken breasts, searching for skim milk, pumping furiously a few hours a day on an exercise bike, etc.

Numerous resources about low carb are on the 'net now. Might start by reading Mark's Daily Apple--the paleo version of low carb, but the paleo part needn't be paid too much attention. Great success stories here; if they can do it, he can:

And maybe watching a few vids will help him understand the problem and get him jump started. To choose a few at random:

That's something I haven't considered. I juice my lemons and limes with skin on. They are not certified organic

I don't get placebo effects because I'm skeptical about everything. That only works on people who believe. Perhaps you don't understand the concept of "placebo effect".

Believe me, the effect I get from this juice is real, not imagined. If I thought for a minute the benefits were only imagined, I would stop immediately as it's quite labour intensive and the taste is disgusting.

I've tried so many things to try to improve my energy levels. This works.

You should have a chat with Robblok. He's started juicing too and also gets the "placebo" effect.

There were big discussions in Austria if some of the chemicals should be totally banned for oranges, because what sticks on the finger when peeling it of and gets from the finger back on the oranges is already harmful. And it was recommended to rinse and brush oranges before peeling. If using the peel for some cooking (cakes) first remove the top of it (with the tool for cucumber and potato...don't know the English word for it.)

These chemicals are only on the surface and don't go inside.

It was some time ago...these are the fragments I remember....some details might be slightly wrong.....
