Teens only want love - or a new mobile

BANGKOK: -- Most Bangkok teenagers want parental love and attention most in life, a new Abac poll revealed on the Thai New Year. But many would settle for a new mobile phone.

According to the Assumption University Abac poll of 1,156 Bangkokians aged 12 to 18, about 40 per cent ranked parental love and attention as their top need in life whereas 19 per cent wanted a new mobile phone instead.

The survey concluded that the capital's teenagers were emotionally needy and increasingly materialistic.

Mobile phones, once a luxury item that only the wealthiest denizens could afford, have become ubiquitous in the capital in recent years, thanks to price wars among competing services and new technologies.

Nearly half of Thailand's 63 million people are mobile-phone subscribers, and the percentage of users is the highest in Bangkok, where mobile phones are deemed a necessity among businessmen, high-school students, bar girls and even trash collectors.
