Herzog’s From One Second to the Next Shows the Destructive Power of Cell Phones

Chuong Nguyen — 08/12/2013

We’ve all heard the message before: don’t text and drive. In fact, it’s illegal in many states in the U.S., and yet over 50 percent of drivers and over 75 percent of teens admit that either they or someone they know still do it. According to the National Safety Council, over 100,000 accidents are caused by irresponsible drivers who text and drive.

While these numbers sound alarming, at the end of the day they aren’t the least bit memorable. Enter filmmaker Warner Herzog with his From One Second to the Next documentary. In his film, which is available through ItCanWait.com, Herzog puts a human face to the tragedies of texting and driving, showing the victims, survivors, and the culprits of this dangerous behavior. More than that, the film shows the harsh reality of what can happen in a split second of indiscretion and asks users if that text was really worth it, especially when the victims end up paralyzed, brain damaged, or dead.

Maybe all cars should have a jammer fitted which comes on as soon as the vehicle starts moving? I am sure someone could come up with a way to jam only outgoing signals or or the network could advise the caller that the person is driving and the call will be registered next time the vehicle stops. ! Even for working people stopping to reply would not be much of an inconvenience.

Calling (even with handsfree) is just as distracting as texting.

Obvious or otherwise, the article was about texting, not answering the phone.

True but its about distractions some clowns will always abuse it, and like the Article. Someone will write an overkill on blatant stupidity to make himself sound clever.thumbsup.gif

I love this line:

Several applications for reading and answering texts are available... but to be fair they are a bit distracting.. I used one here in Thailand but that was pre 3g and it was just slow.

Not quite but I agree it is distracting, if I need to make a call as a rule I do it while not moving or pull over first but receiving a call is easier and safer without question. Personally I'm used to talking while driving having done it for years with racing radios but I don't appreciate most doing it. My favorite is when I pull up behind a soccer mom/mini van at a light and she is busy texting, then the light changes and the wench sits there, then suddenly realizes (usually because a line of pissed off people are blowing their horns) and she either steps on the gas and she's the only one that gets through the light leaving a line of pissed off people at another red light or she takes off really slowly as if she's the only that needs to get on with her day and you get caught by the light, gawd! That flames my arse worse then a 3 foot flame! But it's only one minor example, drivers who do this are both narcissistic and inconsiderate not to even mention down right dangerous..These sorts of technologies are the bane of driving these days and that also includes to some extent, gps units, they have their upside but definitely have a similar downside..

The live2txt app was designed to remove the temptation of looking at the phone, by blocking incoming text alerts and phone ringtones, while the app is activated. The sender also receives a message indicating that you are driving and will return their call/text when you arrive at your destination. This patent pending technology will also send an alert to parents phones every time the app is activated and deactivated, allowing the parent to unobtrusively monitor compliance. It is currently available for Android devices at Google Play for $1.99 and should be available for the I Phone by the end of the year. More information is available at www.getlive2txt.com

Talking on a hands-free phone is no more distracting than talking to a passenger next to you, perhaps even less so, as there is no temptations to look over at another person. (Don’t you hate riding with someone that keeps trying to look at you while they are driving?)

What is distracting is dicking with the phone to initiate the call, or determine if you are going to take the call. It is bad enough holding the phone up on the steering wheel to do this, but using the Bluetooth is even worse (IMO) as you are looking down at the radio screen going through you contact list and whatnot.

Texting and going through your messages or mail is much, much worse. I don’t doubt there are apps that facilitates verbal texting, but I doubt if it is at a level such that you do not have to manually manipulate the phone at some point.

Every single day someone on a bike is on the phone in front of me, this practice is one of the reasons folk don't wear a crash helmet sad.png .

What amazes me is how these kids can afford all these phone calls. facepalm.gif

I'm rethinking my position on this! Having realized how much traffic snarl in BKK is caused motorcyclists stopping to answer telephone calls. If cars did the same the whole city would grind to a halt.
