Theres something going on at Thapae Gate every few days, all year round. It started when (the first) Shinawatra was in power. I gave up on figuring out each individual event a long time ago.

Or to put it another way ..... "I don't know".

IDK should replace IMHO as the most used internet slang/acronym/shorthand on TV

No self respecting ThaiVisa poster would ever admit he did not know anything.

its the hungry ghosts this month and the Chinese who celebrate this believe this is the month when all ghosts get a month's pass to roam around from hell

So festivals are set up to keep them busy from mischief and also relatives take this time to burn offerings of money houses handphones and such for their deceased relatives

After all they need their new iPhone 5 as well :-)

The g/f's mother does some weird things this time of year to supposedly entertain her deceased Chinese husband, as well as her Chinese relatives. She has a pig's head around for a couple of days, a bottle of Lao Khao, fruit, etc. all kept on a shelf kind of thing attached to the wall. She also burns things.

A few of these seem to have got lost near Chiang Mai Gate (inner)

It looks as though someone knicked them and then realised they wouldn't look so cool in the garden, so promptly dumped them.

They are in a jumble near a trash can along the moat. (near Acer service centre).

Meanwhile at Tapae Gate they seem to be constructing a giant igloo!! blink.png

They have some really nifty stuff to buy including life sized cars of various models audi Benz ...handphones clothes ...maids ...houses etc

They also hold auctions to sell good luck stuff and some of these things run into usd$20,000 +++

t started when (the first) Shinawatra was in power."

That's simply not true. I could post hundreds of links to newspaper and TV website articles in the UK that use the phrases in power / come into power etcetera, when referring to governments and prime ministers.

Here's one brief example from the Daily Mail (from an article discussing how economic growth was worse under the labour government in the last decade than at any other time since 1945): "By contrast, in the 1990s, when John Major was in power before being ousted by Tony Blair in 1997, output rose by an average of 2.2 per cent a year."

(Easy to find examples from the Guardian, Telegraph and the BBC too, in case anyone starts making silly comments about the Daily Mail)

It's the International Lantern Festival 2013, and it's pretty good.

We went last night

It's on till the 29th but everyone said go today (24th) because that's when the most stuff is happening.

It's free and at Thapae Gate, from 6 till 10pm.

We happened to be in the area last night and popped by for 40 minutes or so. Honestly, I would give it a pass. No disrespect intended for the poster above me promoting her website but...there was young guy and girl - magical act (terrible), some Korean music and dancing....O.K. but....igloo shaped tents? with Lanna lantern inside - wow - and the usual junk food hawkers. Mostly tourists who looked like they ended up there when they saw the lights/heard the sounds but promptly left. Even my kid didn't like it and wanted to get out of there.

If you are terribly bored there are 100 better things to do.
