The Acer Liquid Z3, a very modestly priced smart phone, was launched just days ago with some fanfare - Thailand being chosen as its debut market, apparently. I want to buy it as a birthday present this week. Can anyone know where I'm most likely to find it available otc - ie not by placing an order - in Chiangmai?

Thanks for the quick response. I'd hoped someone might have actually seen it on sale, but I'll check on that myself tomorrow at those two places.

Before buying the Acer, I would also look at Lenovo's cheapo phone. In some crucial areas the Lenovo is well ahead.

(Specifically screen resolution and camera)

Side by side:

Overview videos for both devices (in Thai, but still good to get a look) :

(Seems both devices are aimed at the Thai / SE Asian market, with incredibly competitive pricing; to get the same with a Samsung badge costs at least double.)

I would also check what network your gift recipient is on. To ensure that the phone works on the correct 3g frequency.

OK. Having had a look round on the net..I couple of things .. the screen resolution is horribly low.. you will see the pixels (I have an older phone with similar screen. Never again) also it seems to be fully compatible with AIS only as the 3g frequencys are 900/2100. Also only a rear camera. No front camera (for Skype etc) small battery. But the biggy if correct. No SD card slot (not sure. It's what one specifications site said)

For about 4k you could get an I-mobile Q4. All the above problems are sorted (if you see them as problem)

^ Right. And it's not just seeing pixels, it's that actually a lot less fits on the screen. That's a big deal when you only see a tiny part of an e-mail, your Facebook feed, a page of a book or website, etc.

I'm mulling over the cons pointed out - and I may have a look at the alternatives mentioned; but to amplify, the present is for a youngster - a teenaged schoolgirl, whose first smartphone this would be, and who has in mind, for example, downloading the thai-english dictionary app for daily classroom (and general) use. Is pixel number etc that relevant for text? It was the low price tag that attracted me (as well as the established brand name). I was under the impression that Acer was aiming to totally undercut the competition - like for like.

Has Siam TV moved? I see on the photo they're having a grand opening. Last time I was there, they were at the Eastern end of the moat, and the Chinese consul nearer the western end.

Well, yes, but not just because text is crisper on a higher resolution display, specifically also because more text fits on screen. With a very low resolution (and smaller) screen on the Acer you need to do more scrolling around to read it all, and just feels more cramped.

And games are hugely important for teenage girls; both handsets should do much better in this regard than anything else priced remotely the same, as they both have dual core CPUs, so they should both do reasonably well.

And games and watching video are also better on a screen that's physically larger.

So I'd pay the additional 400 Baht and get the Lenovo. Both devices are very good for the price though; the Z3 has a couple things going for it, too, such as using a slightly newer version of Android (perhaps not something mostly people would ever notice) and seems a little faster. (Though maybe that's due to that newer Android version, or due to the smaller screen; it doesn't have to move as many pixels around.)

Op.. both phones are OK... within their limits .. it might pay to go down your local Tesco Lotus. Check out the phones available ..they sometimes have the I-mobile and DOopad phones on special offer. I would suggest a higher resolution screen. At least the same as the Lenovo .. have fun.. let us know what you decide.

I'll go over to Tesco Lotus on Superhighway and failing that to Siam TV to browse over the Lenovo and Acer (maybe others in the price range). I hope I'll find both phones at one or other single location.

I'm assuming prices for these phones will be the same across all Chiangmai shops. It doesn't look like the Acer is exactly 'blowing the competition out of the water' as I was led to expect, if there's only a 400k bht (15%) difference.

Both phones are very well priced. But for about 4,000b you will buy a MUCH better phone. Enjoy.... have you double checked which network the other person is on yet... that is fairly important.

Which phone is much better at 4K ?

( Even looking at the cheapo Thai brands (J-phone, i-Mobile) I don't really see anything better at 4K. )

No it doesn't. The linked page has a typo making it look like it's 489x800 which is a resolution that doesn't really exist. It's actually 480x800, same as the Lenovo which is 1000 baht cheaper. Also the CPU isn't dual-core, putting it not even in the same league. While still somehow being more expensive.

That indeed comes close, if you don't mind the brand. And still 1000 baht more.

Also comparable; same specs, 1000 baht more. i-Mobile brand.

> Q4.. can be had for 4k up depending where you buy it

Now we're up to 5000. Specs still not better than the 3000 baht Lenovo. And still i-Mobile brand.

Yes. Same specs, 1000 baht more. Jelly Bean OS though, so that's marginally better. If you don't mind the i-Mobile brand.

> strangely i would also add this phone.. not because its cutting edge , its not. But it is rugged and waterproof.

Gingerbread OS.. that's ancient. Interesting phone though, I agree.

So what have you got against i-mobile many people very happy with their phones and they represent a very reasonable package for not a lot of money. Also the Zte at least has dual band 3g which I think for.Thailand is very important as 2100mhz has only just been released with limited coverage.

But anyway it's up to the Op. What are your alternative choices?

I think the Lenovo also does regular 900/1800 Mhz GSM, in addition to 2100 3G. Not sure if phones that support additional bands would switch over to a different band for 3G.. Don't they just fall back to 2G in that case?

Siam TV is on the South side of the moat near the middle of Chang Lor road. The big square white building in the middle shown here in Google Maps. Unless it has moved from there in the last year I was there.

If the network is set up properly the will use All available frequency. But it will have preferred frequency which it will hang onto longer.. in Thailand AIS use 900/2100 3g. Dtac &True use 850/2100 and CAT uses 850 and TOT uses 2100 (Ltd coverage)

So the best phone to have to be a little future proof would be one with 850/900/2100 3g.

Thank you gentlemen for your contributions in helping me to choose. In the end I got the Lenovo. The bigger screen and higher pixels, together with the reluctance to pay for the dual sim capacity, I think these were key reasons. Also the white Lenovo looked like it would appeal to a teenager.

Got the white one at the small Jaymart shop on the 3rd floor of Airport Plaza yesterday late afternoon. It's true that most places just have the black.

It's going to be used on AIS, I believe.

For a little more (5,900) Lenovo make the A706, released fairly recently. Nicely specified phone with 4.5" screen, quad core processor, 1gb ram, etc. I just bought one and am very happy with it.

Not widely available, but I saw them in both Zoom and Jaymart on 3rd floor of airport plaza (only Zoom had case and screen protector though. Also available from invadeit.co.th
