Meeting on LPG price hike to be held on August 29th

BANGKOK, 26 August 2013 (NNT) – Taxi drivers agreed to call off the protest at the Royal Plaza after the government had promised to find a solution to the LPG price hike which will take effect on September 1st.

The gathering came after the cabinet had agreed to increase the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 50 satang per kilogram which will go on for 12 months, starting from September 1st. The protesters requested the government help carry the burden or provide other assistances, saying taxi fare has remained at the same rate for 5 consecutive years, while prices of gas have gone up from time to time; thus it is hard for taxi drivers to make ends meet.

After the talk between President of the Siam Taxi Co-operatives Limited Vitoon Neawpanitch and Mr. Suporn Atthawong, Prime Minister's Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. Suporn promised the protesters that he would summon all related agencies namely the Transport Ministry, the Department of Land Transport, the Energy Ministry, and PTT Public Company Limited, to discuss possible solution to the LPG price hike. He said the meeting is scheduled for August 29th. Until then, the President of the Siam Taxi Co-operatives has decided to call off the gathering and told taxi drivers to wait for the result of the upcoming meeting before making any moves.
