News_Editor
CHENGDU, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- A man with financial problems attacked fellow bus passengers and pedestrians in southwestern China on late Sunday evening, killing four people and injuring nearly a dozen others before being taken into custody, local authorities said on Monday. The 41-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname Li, was one of the passengers traveling on the No. 42 bus which runs through downtown Chengdu, the capital of the country's Sichuan province. Security cameras on board the vehicle showed the attack began at approximately 9:16 p.m. local time on Sunday. In the footage, Li can be seen taking out a knife before starting to attack other passengers on the bus, according to a statement released by the city's public security office. Li can then be seen leaving the bus, moving onto the street where he attacked several other people, but he was soon stopped when officers opened fire and took him into custody. Investigators said four people were killed while eleven others were injured, including a 10-year-old girl who remained in a critical condition. The suspect remained in police custody on Monday and was talking to investigators, but it was not immediately clear whether he was injured during his arrest. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, Li told investigators that he had been having financial disputes with relatives, but it was not immediately known whether it was the motive behind Sunday's attack. He had left Xichang City on Thursday and traveled to his home in Jintang on Saturday before arriving in Chengdu on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's incident follows two other knife attacks in China earlier this month. Three people were killed and twelve others were injured on August 19 when a knife-wielding man attempted to rob a bus in Henan province, and five people were injured in Hubei province on August 16 when a man went on a stabbing spree before killing himself by jumping off the roof of a shopping mall.
