34-year-old Warawut Kulphan was caught with 10,000 Xanax pills.

PHUKET: -- Police manning a checkpoint just south of the Heroines Monument last night (August 27) as part of a continuing drive against a variety of crimes, stopped a BMW car and seized 10,000 Alprazolam pills – better known as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

The driver, 34-year-old Warawut Kulphan, from Takua Tung in Phang Nga was stopped after he was “seen acting suspiciously”.

The pills were on the back seat, packed in a green plastic bag.

Wawarut admitted that he picked up the drugs, which were mailed to a house in Baan Promphan in Pa Khlok, and was taking them to distribute in the Karon area.

He was taken to to Thalang Police Station for further questioning on a charge of possession of restricted medicines without any permit.

Although Xanax is widely prescribed, legally, as an anti-anxiety, it is also popular in some circles as a recreational drug, either on its own or combined with other drugs. It is also used by methamphetamine addicts to allow them to sleep.

What does Xanax have to do with driving a BMW, is the brand of the car related to the legal or illegal action?!facepalm.gifwhistling.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gifwai2.gif

Everyone knows that people who can afford to drive Mercedes and BMW's are above the law.

This must be some kind of PR stunt by the BIB. laugh.png

...status....it's all about status....never mind right or wrong....

Why did he admit to planning to distribute them? It seems easier to pay a doctor to say he suffers from chronic insomnia and get him to write a prescription

Might be forlorn thinking, but I hope these drugs are destroyed. The benzodiazepine class of drugs - pure evil. Withdrawing from them is one nasty experience. (sorry to move off topic a little - these drugs are my pet hate)

What a load of old cobblers. These drugs provide relief for many. If found to be the real McCoy, and not fakes, it would be a better idea to donate them to the Thai Red Cross.

I have used half a gram of Alprazolam before retiring for the past three years. It was originally prescribed for me by a doctor at Bangkok's 'most prestigious hospital' (it is certainly BKK's most expensive) and ensures that I get a least a good 7 hours uninterrupted sleep. There are fears that the drug can be addictive but I have not found that to be the case. The hospital will only allow me to have 10 1 gram tablets for one calender month now, which means that I only take this medication when I consider it necessary, which I accept may well be a good thing.

There are no perfect drugs and each has a down side i.e. possible side effects. This is a risk that doctors must weigh up before prescribing.

well it took the air force 8 years to diagnose my post traumatic stress disorder. Xanax was my cure. if I do not take it I would be shut up in my bedroom afraid to experience the world. you have to think of a persons quality of life before making a blanket statement like that

Some people need them!

To the doubters, look up benzobuddies.org and then tell me again what you think about them. Sporadic use is ok, but regular daily use is to be carefully controlled - not for more than 2 weeks. And DON'T talk to me about doctors. Most of them are pretty damn ignorant about the dependency issues of benzos not to mention the withdrawal symptoms, which I can tell you from personal experience are hell. Also, please tell me why benzos are slowly but surely being banned as a prescription drug around the world? Knowledge medical people call this class of drugs the most evil ever prescribed. For a bloody good reason.

Half a gram is 500 mg.....the biggest tablet is 1 mg.

So many errors and misleading information in just the titled article.

The fact that he was driving a "BMW" is irrelevant information to the whole article. Yet emphasizing in capital letters and even mentioning it at all would lead a reader to believe that "BMW driver" may be an employee of BMW perhaps officially conducting BMW business.

Xanax is Xanax, maximum mg is 1. (.25, .5, 1.)

Alprazolam the generic for Xanax comes in 2.mb "bars" commonly known as "z-bars". These bars have a perforation/molded dent in the pill allowing it to easily be broken in quarters. This is the best option and most cost efficient to have prescribed if your doctor trusts you to take your recommended dosage of say .5 or 1.

How is it cost efficient? In the USA, you pay per pill regardless of the mg.

I am glad to hear that Alprazolam has finally made it to Thailand as 5years ago + it wasn't available when I checked. And we all know living here in LOS can cause anyone daily anxieties especially if you want something done or fixed, NOW!

Finally made it to Thailand, where have you been it's been here loads of years?

It's been here so long, that as from June 17th, 2013 sales, manufacture and importing of the drug is banned. It is still allowed to be prescribed by hospitals, but it's now a controlled substance. It is also illegal for tourists to bring it into the country. It was banned as a knee jerk reaction to date rape stories.

It has been a couple years since I followed up on this as even when I do experience bouts of anxiety from everyday living, I'm simply just not quick to pop a pill like most people turn too. I live having a functioning liver. My last prescription from a hospital was again for XANAX with the max 1mg dose, Brand name and not Alprazolam. KUDOS if Alprazolam has made it here as posting and responding to some of these OP's and posters can bring on bouts of anxiety daily. Thank you very much.

It doesn't knock you out... It just makes sleep easier and deeper. The ambient aircraft noise and minor discomforts are much less disruptive.

If someone wanted to wake me up I'd wake - 2 hrs into a flight under the influence of Xanax I still wake up and go to the bathroom if I need to.

That said - it might effect others in different ways.

Using the Emergency on a Flight excuse is not really valid: Statistically we'd have to live on a plane in flight until the age of 120 to experience an emergency (I read that somewhere !)... the effects are less extreme than being totally drunk anyway....

Wouldn't this be great if you had any knowledge of Xanax. What, did you have a wife that used these to put up with a bad marriage. These are widely available from any Dr. in the US, and successfully helps many people through small bouts of depression. Thailand was wrong to make them illegal as a "date rape drug". What hogwash. Were you on the committee to ban them? If you had trouble getting off of them, you are certainly easily addictive, and misused these pills to the max. Deal with your own addictions, but don't assume everyone is an addict like yourself.
