Here now, they are questioning heavily about tourist visa & taking a very long time, saw 2 people refused, & said to me, ;not sure if my boss give tomorrow;.

This used to be the best consulate in the area, Where to go next in the area, any ideas?

As has been said many times Tourist Visas and Visa exempt entries are only intended to facilitate "tourism".

Serial abuse of these entries in misguided attempts to remain in Thailand long term will, eventually, provoke a response from the authorities.

For those who qualify a "long stay" visa/extension of stay is easily available in a number of categories.

How many have you gotten back to back?

They are going to draw the line sometime.

Yeap and could be back to restricting the number of entries/days allowed in Thailand, unless you have a proper "long term" visa...

when Thailand does come into the Asean common market I am sure tourist .visa rules will be changed to conform with the general procedure in the other Asean countries i.e. maximum 180 days in one year.

To which other ASEAN countries do those rules currently apply?

None that I can think of. Vietnam is flexible...a 6 month multiple entry visa is available and the 12-month one seems to be available again by limited agents and the Cambodian consulates. Cambodia allows virtually unlimited stays, provided you enter on an ordinary visa first and extend it, 12 months at a time.

Singapore and Malaysia each allow 3 months at a time for many nationalities, mine included. Visa runs are acceptable and do give you a fresh period of stay, but I have never stayed 3 months or anywhere near that long in either country so I have no idea what their attitudes are towards long term tourists. Malaysia is probably flexible, but I doubt Singapore would be.

I was there last Wednesday with the savan vegas visa deal. The guy from savan vegas gave the paperwork and money and I had to show my face for 5 seconds and that was it no questions asked. Next day I had my double entry tourist visa.

Yes too true Joe, have 2 years of a combination of tourist visas & land voas. I guess it's time for a change in my case, trouble is I have not managed to find any Thai language courses in Ubon that offer an ED visa, if anybody knows of one I would love to know.

PS, think the staff have been changed at the Sav Thai consulate & probably a rap on the knuckles from BKK following the visa stamp scam in KL, also heard from one guy that a guy was caught in Muk with one, somebody else mentioned that Sav was in on a slow long term selling on-too, but maybe hearsay, I don't know.

PPS, They are at present giving out lists of requirements with the form: Requiring travel itinerary, &/or return ticket, &/or proof of funds for a tourist visa!, This is definitely new, before it was like going to a candy store.

No Thai language schools in Ubon that I know of.

I think showing some money coming into the country would help. A bank book with some transfers in would be good. This would be proof you are not working here.

A trip farther afield might help. The consulate in Bali will do a 3 entry with 6 months validity if you can show one ticket out of the country.

Thanks again Joe, that's a good tip I never knew about that, a good option, I may try it. But, I really do love learning languages, I want to learn more Thai & Lao, very little English is used at home here with my girlfriend. Perhaps an online/Skype Thai language course would work for me here on the Mekong. Does anybody know of options on offer that are definitely not scams?

PS, Went to hopefully collect the visa at 2pm, was shown a list of requirements: evidence of 20,000bt, plane ticket leaving within 90 days, hotel reservation, travel itinerary, (having spoken to other applicants, they were given the list of requirements at the time of application, but, I WAS NOT given this info!).I was shown this list of what they wanted to see within 2 hrs of closing upon collection, which I could not do from Laos, so they gave me no visa at all, used up a page with the sticker & voided & I Iost the 2,000bt fee. Does anyone know if this voided sticker will cause me problems with either doing a final land border crossing or applying for an ED visa?

You will get a 15 day "visa exempt" entry to Thailand on your return.

The voided sticker will possibly raise a red flag to any immigration or consulate official who sees it.

Even if an on line language course is available it will not be a solution to your visa problem.

Are you an Asean national.

Then you're in luck.

If your not, if you;re from Europe, the U.K., or the U.S. ..... it doesn't help you.

Why should it?

1, Knew that.

2, Suspected that.

3, Thanks Sceptic.

I don't think the voided visa will even be noticed or create a problem.

Have considered enrolling in a university.

Walen if I recall offers online classes. One option you could look into would be enrolling to a school with online/skype and getting a multiple entry ED visa. You would not be able to get it anywhere nearby. Australia or back home possibly but you could check with Bali about it.

It would mean border runs every 90 days but Chong Mek is handy for those.

My hearing is not that good, well bad on the phone, I sent an email but no reply, well 2 in a month, so phoned Colombo... Sri Lanker..

If I understood correct they also will do a 3 entry with 6 months validity, [come and talk with us everything is possible] if i heard right takes 4 days, collect Passport morning of day 4... as for requirement for any Visa, not sure they understood what I was asking..

Maybe someone has been there ? someone know for sure what is required and can get there ?

Yes, can do that.

Can u share the info regarding the course? Costs, frequency of classes etc? I intend to spend next year living in multiple cites/areas so this would be ideal for me.

The course will focus on speaking and reading. Cost is 24,960 Baht, classes are twice a week. Study times depend on your level. The system works very well.

Or if not then a multiple entry ED visa. I am asking this for meithai.

Yes, we can arrange for extensions at the branch closest to the place where students live. I can also make other, even more convenient solutions to visa problems and extensions but I just need to know more about an individual case.

I would prefer that. Simplify all the VISA crossing rules and simply make it so a tourist gets 180 days max whether he does it by repeated land crossings, flights out and in, etc.
