Flying Baby

Featured Replies

just a quickie, hopefully somebody will have an answer.

My freind wants to fly up from BK to CM and bring his Son with him who is 4 months old.

He is worried about the altitude's effect on his on's young eardrums (popping and all that)

Does anyone know anything about this.?

Thanx in advance

If the son has a cold or congested sinuses he will have a problem with pressure on his eardrums.

Regardless of age this is normally the case.

Most airlines require that a baby be at least 5 weeks old before they can travel by air.

Our son's first flight (from BKK to UTH) was when he was 4 months old. And he has been flying regularily since then including a trip to the US when he was 11 months old. We always make sure he has a bottle of milk to drink during the takeoff and climb out and also for the descent and landing...Have never had a problem...

Any source for that? I've heard of many babies flying before they were 5 weeks old. I wouldn't do it myself but have heard of others who have.

Our son did Bangkok to London at 3.5 months and I agree stoneman's comment about drinking milk/breastfeeding for take-off and landing - the sucking action helps equalise the pressure changes.

ThaiPauly - it would be good for your friend to talk to his kid's pediatrician before travelliing. They can advise about whether the baby has any conditions that may make flying difficult and generally answer any questions they may have.

Edited to add: your friend also needs to be aware that an infant needs a ticket. On Thai, it is 10% of the adult published fare, even when the infant is sitting on the passengers lap. I'm not 100% sure of the prices for domestic flights but that is definitely the case for international. I assume Nok Air, Air Asia, etc. are similar

There is no charge on Nok Air and Air Asia as long as they are under 2 and sitting in your lap...AirAsia requires proof of age...Were never asked on Nok Air...In both cases, the child does get a boarding pass and it is marked as "Infant"

In answer to your question, yes, infants do encounter alot of pain due to pressure changes and ear blockages. A quick stop at the doc's before the flight wouldn't be out of order.
