I can also see many point the OP makes. I was in the states a few years ago, I went to a bar with some friends and got talking with a local lady, She was in her 30's, her partner (can't remember if they were married) was in his 60's. She admitted she was primarily with him because he offered security, he had health insurance etc. So even in the States this still happens today.

I was 40 when I met my 29 yr old wife to be today I am 57 and she is 46 . My Great Grandfather was born in 1900 Scotland. That was a full 8 years before the introduction of a pension scheme for the elderly, and the other progressive acts that followed under the guidance of primarily the Liberal Party was the first time in UK history that universal benefits became available.

Words like the Poor House were known to him, destitution and rank poverty were only one illness away. I believe that can still be the case in the US at the moment.

We are talking within the lifetime of Westerners here, not ancient history, not even in living memory, in the lifetime!

Yet we show up full of arrogance, the vast majority of us having had no hand in struggling for equality, and condemn Thailand to a daily dose of vitriol. For what? For not having a welfare state? For not having a universal health system of the highest order? For not having sufficient care for the elderly in place?

We who have done nothing growling like dogs about how backward this country is, while taking full advantage of the low cost economy that keeps the vast majority of the population in effective hand to mouth mode. It's a seriously hypocritical stance by many.

Sit down with your Great Grandmother, what would she say? I bet she'd say I understand why a young lady needs the financial stability an older man can bring. What about love Granny?

There are some countries where this is a fact of everday life. But Thailand today?

Rather than 'eat or not eat'. I think it has more to do with a preference for Phuket Lobster, over a tin of sardines in tomato sauce.

I had a non live-in Kik here for about 6 years. Her family consisted of her mother, young brother and sister and older sister. They have all visited my place on a number of occasions for a 'family' BBQ, Mu Kata etc. Ern, my former Kik, now 32 YO, left for the Pattaya Bars at 16, but realised very early that she would never be able to speak English, this she told me, she saw as a necessity if she was to 'eat' in Pattaya. So she returned to BKK and became a career Coyote Girl for Thai Nite Clubs and Bars. (as an aside, her years in the business, has left her with a very low opinion of men in general)

Both her older and younger sisters finished Uni and have normal, average jobs. The older sister having a condo and a car.

First of all it's theblether if you don't mind.

Do I think they will literally die of starvation? Of course I don't. However many of these women from all walks of life, not just BG's, will find themselves abandoned with children at an early age due to the emotional carnage that passes as relationships in this country.

What's the cruel trick then? Thai men won't look at them twice. At best they'll end up as giks scrabbling about for a bit of attention. Scratching a living and worrying themselves to death as they see the bills pile up and a lifetime of poverty beckoning. Grinding sickening poverty is the daily reality for multiple millions of Thai women. Go take a wander into some of these Thai "homes", I've seen better looking bombed out sheds.

So when you have a situation like that in front of you, what are you going to do? You're going to make the pragmatic choice, not for love, but for survival and to improve your prospects.

Just the same way our Great Grandmothers did, and those before them. When there's no welfare state to back you up, you marry the best prospect, not the handsome poor guy. Maybe if you knew anything about Thai and or Western history you would have known that.

Maybe I am one of the odd ones out. I even know Tom Kirby who set out to America (Wilmington in Delaware) during the civil war there in the USA. He married an American woman (Keturah) and brought her back to England to work and live on his farm. All their family are buried in the same cemetary. My grandaughter carries Keturah as her middle name

I have the records of very many marriages and it is rare indeed for there to be a large age gap. Most married at a young age. They married young and started families young too especially as many children died too young. From tin miners to gamekeepers, to those who set off for Australia to start life in that brave new world there are many stories of hardship.

From the 1800's to the 1960's many lived in small places. The children slept top to tail in one bed or on a straw mattress. Widows struggling to make ends meet taking in lodgers. A husband dies and the family are made homeless because the houses (cottages) were owned by the company the man worked for. When he died the company took the house back for a man with family who took the dead mans place.

Hardship has been there for the greatest majority, yet many people today are scared or ashamed to admit their heritage and ancestry. I am proud to have such a diversity in my heritage. They struggled through life in many cases. They moved to where the work was. In the case of the tin miners they moved up north on trains that were laid on and took literally everything with them except the bricks and mortar to a very uncertain future.

Wilmington cemetary in Delaware has many headstones too. As do places in Australia.

I think that knowing your ancestors past can help you understand the mindset of many poor Thai people who live in tin shacks or houses of breeze block with no plaster on the walls, no water pump or water storage. An old motor, no air con, the odd fan. Scared of the next electric bill. Living hand to mouth day after day. Sharing food as many of our ancestors did. Helping each other out. Families working and living together to survive.

Is it no wonder some send their daughters out to work in Phuket or Pattaya and similar places. Is it no wonder many young women see us as ultra rich and would marry us at the drop of a hat to get a better life. That many try to scam us thinking we will not miss a few tens of thousands of Baht.

I could go on.....

In the UK in Saxon times,there was a very good reason to marry very young,the average lifespan was a mere 30-40 years,so it was a case of marry young,to live to bring the children up. And many young women died in child birth.

Thing is though most young guys don't care about being chosen for a life time of providing financial security to girls.

They leave that to the old blokes whilst they just enjoy having sex with the girls for free and not having to provide anything in return other than being good company (something most of the older blokes are not able to provide).

I don't know any young guy in Thailand (under 30) who wants to settle down and stay with the same women for the rest of his days and provide for her.

He's happy banging his way through as many girls as he can (and he tends to have plenty of options).

I would like to know how many actually came to SEA for any length of time as a young, single bloke? Maybe theblether may like to start a new thread asking punters how old were they when they first stepped off a plane in SEA.

Yes it's true what you say. I had quite a few offers of marriage over the years. Here, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines..... But it was out of the question when at that age. But the girls will take a cashed up, decent, goodlooking young bloke over an old bloke any day of the week. I don't think things have changed alot. But then I don't get out that much anymore.

I spent half my teens, all my twenties and half my thirties tripping around and living in SE Asia. Then I got married here, which put the brakes on that a bit for 20 years or so.

My first, ever, real adult GF, after leaving high school in 1968, was on my 2nd trip to SEA when I was 18 YO. It was in Singapore, Jessie was Chinese and managed a bar for her elderly adopted chinese grandparents. She was in her Mid Twenties. Not on the game either. Far from it. In fact I was her first BF. We had a great time in those days. Had a ball!

Had a girlfriend in HK (chinese of course) who was considerably older than me. Anna, Not on the game either. She was quite 'famous' and well respected in Wanchai. She lost a bit of that respect when she hooked up with me actually. In her heyday she was one of the top Hostesses at the USA Playboy Club. She loved a drink. She introduced me to 'Salty Dogs'. Doesn't that make you crook the next day.
