Stricken Costa Concordia ship set upright

GIGLIO: -- Engineers in Italy have succeeded in setting the cruise ship Costa Concordia upright, 20 months after it ran aground off the island of Giglio.

They said that the unprecedented salvage effort "reached degree zero (vertical), which was our target".

In the operation that took all of Monday and most of the night, they used cables and metal boxes filled with water to roll the ship onto a platform.

The Costa Concordia capsized in January 2012, killing 32 people.

The bodies of two of the victims of the disaster, by the island of Giglio, have never been found. There are hopes that they may be located during the operation.

Upright! Costa Concordia is raised from the seabed in £500million salvage operation (but there's still no sign of the two missing bodies)

  • Engineers confirmed that they reached 25 degrees shortly before midnight and the vessel was finally upright by the early hours on Tuesday morning
  • The 114,000 tonne ship has been marooned outside Giglio harbour off the coast of Tuscany for 20 months
  • Thirty-two people lost their lives on January 13, 2012 when the vessel hit rocks and sank with 4,200 people aboard
  • Liner was rotated with pulleys and lifted up in the largest and most expensive maritime salvage operation ever
  • Engineers expect a 'burp' of noxious gases as ship is lifted and trapped air bubbles are released
  • They raised the ship by 65 degrees - without it breaking in two - and it is vertical so it can be towed away next spring
  • Ship's captain Francesco Schettino, aka 'Captain Coward', at home in Naples preparing to face trial over the disaster

I must say in all honesty I spent a pleasant few weeks on the Costa Romantica , a sister ship, many years ago.

The captain on this vessel was and is a bad egg and deserves what justice awaits him.

He does not in any way reflect the skill, intelligence and integrity of the Italian people.
