Chiang Mai - Where To Stay

Featured Replies

We are heading to Chiang Mai for a bit.

Can anyone suggest a guest house thats out of the way a bit but still quite cheapish.

Been there before and really didn't like the feel of staying next to so many bars on Tapae Gate.

Cheers

Hillside 4 Condotel on Huay Keaw Road. Not far from Central. Has weight room and pool and room service. Units go for around 800B per night. Go to the front desk on the second floor.

Not exactly guesthouses guys and also a bit out the way.

Try Gaps House, which is about 100 metres or so within the moat down a little soi off of Rachadamnoen - which is the main road running from the actual Thapae Gate. I think it's about 500 per night there now, but nice quiet grounds, all air-conned, includes breakfast and an easy walk to the good stuff. Tel: 053 278 140 ([email protected])

Loads of others within the moat around the 200 baht range, but you need air-con this time of year to be honest.

If you fancy a guesthouse with pool, try Lai Thai, which is down the southern end of the eastern side of the moat. Above 700 by now I expect.

Portobello House on Wangsingkham Road (just across from the Ping River) is fairly cheap. Not sure what the rates are now, but they were 250 baht a few years ago. Single room, private bath, fan and a/c rooms. They don't speak English, but are very nice people.

191/1 Wangsingkham Road

ban kaew. near the alliance france. their phone number is 053 271 606. its a lovely place with a great garden on the premises. very quite and the staff are lovely.

Galare Guesthouse

Right on the Mae Ping River, easy walking distance to the Night Bazaar and Thapae Rd.

Beautiful rooms, around 800 Baht/Night

Galare is good. Next to Riverview Lodge. Near Thanon Caroen Prathet and Thanon Tha Phae -south of the bridge and west of Mae Nam Ping.

The nearby Diamond Riverside is 1,000B and has a huge pool, river view, and free breakfast buffet. The place is tatty, however. But hey, it has AC and a lift - a big plus in the hot season.

I say pop for the Empresss, by far the best value and just out of the way enough. It was very nice. There's a great little restaurant across the street (thanon)

The night bazaar area seemed too busy and choked at night and the Tha Phae area seemed as you describe.

Hi ! Take a look at this site http://www.moondanceriver.com

I always use Lai Thai. Nice rooms, nice outdoor (but covered) restaurant, nice

pool. Five minute trot to the Night Bazaar. 50Baht coach to the airport/coach station. Own moped hire/excursions etc. Cheap enough - especially when you tell them you are not a tourist - Thai helps. All over nice :o

[edit] oh, they have a web site, but don't book through it 'cos you'll get charged more. Usefull for room info though. Here

On my last visit to Chiangmai i was recommended THE GALARE GUEST HOUSE and was well satisfied with the rooms/food/service and price.it is right on the river and just across the bridge is The Riverside bar/restarant.give it a try you will not be dissapointed.

Care to offer any feedback, OP?

try Veerachai Court, Thapae Road Soi 2. > family run, friendly place > best rooms @ 650baht/night
