PHUKET: -- Bar and restaurant owners whose establishments encroach on Kamala Beach have been given more time to remove their illegal structures.

The original deadline, set after an inspection by local authorities in early September, was yesterday.

“We will inspect the beach on October 8 and make a list of any establishments that have not removed their encroaching structures,” Mr Prasert Poksakul, an official with the Kamala Tambon Administrative Organization (OrBorTor), told the Phuket Gazette yesterday.

“Then we will send that list to Vice Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada, along with a letter that states that if the owners don’t remove the structures themselves, we will demolish them,” he said.

The new deadline for demolition will be set by Vice Governor Chamroen, said Mr Prasert.

“Once the Vice Governor approves the demolition letter and sets a date to take action, we will call all the bar and restaurant owners in to sign the letter,” he said.

Mr Prasert urged beach establishments to comply.

“We would like to warn the bar and restaurant owners to follow our rules and remove their structures before the Provincial officers come in and do it for them,” he said.

They throw these up in a few days and it takes months to get them down, if ever.

It least it's not Surin. The structures there will be up for a long time to come. This is why it's so important to call these businesses on it when they first make the grab. They're going to steal as much of the beach as they can at every opportunity. Why not? With the local government so inept on getting these structures removed, steal while the gettings good.

Inept or corrupt ? I have always assumed that money is accepted and paperwork is lost or mislaid.

I was at Kamala yesterday. The structures are going up...in preparation for high season...not coming down.

Surely, one Thai driver in a bulldozer could fix the problem in a day.... After all, its an illegal structure, so any loss should be the responsibility of the owner... thumbsup.gif

The letter signing initiative is a great idea by the Governor. He will then have a signed "pick list" of who owes him monthly tea money.

..........yes.............forever.........

.....same as the forest gangs with friends in high places....???

What is the point of having a deadline if it is not a deadline? A deadbrain? Should have gone in with a bulldozer this morning... IF they were serious, and we know how serious officials can be here.

No, 20 minutes.

Get real...bulldoze debris all over the beach? The structures would need to be dismantled and the materials properly disposed of. So if I were an owner I'd just wait for the government to do this all for free for me. Yes the government should do it AND deliver a bill for 2 times the cost of a private contractor. That may provide the needed incentive.

Should also get rid of the idiots who block the Bangkok pavements daily with their tables and chairs, so much so that you are forced to walk in the road to get round them. I sometimes pick up a table or two and move it into the road to make a point, I am not a popular person...

"They're going to steal as much of the beach as they can at every opportunity." - they're not "stealing" it. They are making corrupt payments to use it for commercial purposes.

You can be sure they have been paying rent to someone. City officials, police etc.

I like the restaurants at Kamala. It adds Character to the beach
