I am a US citizen. I am in Thailand now (pattaya). I flew in from the USA and got the standard 30 day visa on arrival. I would like to stay longer. I know I can do a land crossing visa run and get a 15 day extension. I know I can also exit to Laos or Cambodia then fly back in and get another 30 day visa on arrival at the airport. However, there is a chance I may stay longer so I am wondering if I can get a 60 day tourist visa? Can I take one of the simple land border crossing trips, and get a 60 day tourist visa? This would be the simplest option for me. My EVA air ticket back home is good for one year so I don't see any problems with onward travel proof.

Thanks

You can get a tourist visa either a single or 2 entry in Laos at the embassy in Vientiane or the consulate. Savannakhet overland both are close to a border crossing.

See one of the reports here for more info:

You will have to overnight in Laos however as you must use the Thai Consulate in morning to obtain the visa next workday afternoon.

OK. I am getting the idea. It looks like a visit to a Thai consulate is needed, just as if I was originally getting the tourist visa back in the USA before I traveled. I was hoping the visa company might take care of things. I have been considering visiting Laos and Vientienne.

Thanks folks.

I don't suppose it matters that much at this point, but in one sentence you said/implied that you got a tourist visa in the US and in the O/P you said something about "visa on arrival," by which you probably meant Visa Exempt Entry.

Are you in Thailand on a tourist visa or visa exempt entry?

I got the visa exempt entry 30 day thingy passport stamped on arrival. I don't see where I implied I got a Tourist Visa in the US. As relatively easy as that is to get before I travel, I rarely have much advance planning when I travel to Thailand. And I don't like the idea of mailing my passport around. I do not live anywhere close to a real Thai embassy and the local consulate in South Florida near Miami seems a bit dodgy. That is why I said "If I had.."

It looks like I will need a night in Laos and a visit to an embassy in person to get the tourist visa. Is a single entry tourist visa really used up when you make the first trip into Thailand or do you get one more entry? I get the usual meaning of "single entry" but better to ask a question than be surprised later.

In English English "single(one) entry" means just that smile.png

Clue................. one means one only, not two or more !biggrin.png

Actually it is right to ask because with a Thailand single-entry Visa you can actually re-entry as many times you want provided you pay for re-entry permit(s).

Not quite true !

A re entry permit will only "protect" the original permission of stay date which in the case of a tourist visa will be 60 days from and including the date of entry.

No extra time is gained by buying a re-entry permit .

If a person wishes to buy a multiple re- entry permit it is true that multiple exits/entries could be made within the envelope of the 60 permitted days stay.

Would it be worth the 3800bht cost?

That is another question !smile.png

What makes you think that the honorary consulate in Coral Gables is dodgy?

They seem to operate out of some law office but I have never gotten them to answer the phone. Emails take a day to answer. Very hard to have a conversation with that time delay between exchanges. So, I never used them even though it would have been very nice to have gotten the 60 day tourist visa in advance. I could drive down there and drop things off, but I just never got a feeling that they were competent in dealing with Thai things. Maybe they are and maybe others have used them. I just didn't get that impression.

Honorary Thai consulates operate out of a business of some kind. Every thing from law offices. construction companies and real estate offices. Myself and others have found them to be very helpful compared to the official consulates.

Have you tried checking Coral Gables consulates website for info? Link: http://www.thaiconsulatemiami.com/

Well I did never said that re-entry would gain extra time. My point is that due to the arcane, counter-intuitive rules, most questions are valid. Will make sure I'l dot all the I next time.
