If I were to arrive on an O-A multiple entry visa, do a border run just before the expiration of the visa, I understand that I will be allowed to stay for another year if I return prior to the original visa expiring. My question: Is the multiple entry stamp extended for the next year also or do I need to puchase a another multiple entry stamp for the extended year if I plan on being in and out of the country during the second year?

Thanks

Travel after the visa expires will require a re-entry permit. You get that at an immigration office.

1000 baht for a single entry or 3800 baht for a multiple entry permit.

Maybe stamp was the wrong word to use. On the actual visa where it says "No. of Entry" is the letter "M"

Here's the words I use to explain it to my friends:

The O-A multiple entry visa allows you to enter Thailand repeatedly for one year from the date it was issued. Every time you enter you are given a stay of one year. Every time you leave that permission to stay is voided.

So, the validity dates of the O-A visa are unrelated to the validity dates of your Permission To Stay.

Before you depart on your last exit in that initial 365 days from visa issue, you need to get a Re-Entry Permit to keep that last Permission To Stay alive for its full 365 days.

Posted

A re-entry permit is no need until after the expiration date of the visa (use or enter before date). Prior to that date you get a one year permitted to stay date from each entry. After the visa expires if you want to travel you will need to have a re-entry permit to keep that last permitted to stay date valid when you re-enter the country.

Do you already have a Non O-A, Multiple and where did you get it?

I ask because there is a (misleading) text on different Thai consular site, that implies the need for a reentry permit even during the first year.

This would be true for a single entry Non O-A and for some readers this lead to the concliusion that are no more Non O-A Multiple visas issued.

Wrong I guess?

Posted

It is the opposite. I don't think any embassy or consulate has issued a single entry in years. Most websites clearly state no single entries are issued.

When I got my O-A in Dubai some years ago, they only issued them as multiple entry. Of course things may have changed in the interim, but at the time it was the standard issue.

Please, I am confused. I concluded that "Duck Duck" was refering to a Multiple O Visa. Not a "Permission to Stay based upon **** ". Visa & Permission are two different items?

A multiple entry "O-A" visa holder is granted "permission to stay" for one year year on each entry to Thailand whilst the visa is valid.

If an entry is made just prior to the visa expiring a years "permission to stay" is granted thus securing a second years stay from the original one year visa. It is during this second years stay that a re-entry permit is required if traveling outside Thailand.

If toward the end of the second years stay a person wishes to remain in Thailand then an "extension of stay" must be requested from the Thai immigration service.( Financial and other requirements must be met)

He has a non-oa multiple entry visa for retirement which gives a one year permit to stay on each entry for a year. If he was to re-enter on or before the 31st he would another one year entry and would need a re-entry permit to keep it valid.

A multiple non-o visa only gives a 90 day entry.

Well Oh Well ! I have been granted several 12 Month Multiple Entry "O" Visas but I have chosen not to apply for "Extension of Stay". My Passport therefor automatically is stamped for 90 day stay prior to my enjoyable "Mini Holiday" across the border. This Visa has in effect a 15 month validity.

You apply at a Thai Embassy in your country of origin.

I have read repeatedly that you can only get an O-A Visa from your home country, but I have confirmed that a friend of mine, who carries an US passport, received his while living in the Phillipines.

It is possible if you have residency in another country than your home country.

Was true for a Swiss citizen living in Germany, 2010.

And that is still the wording on the Thai Embassy website as of today.

You need a proof of residence, called "Meldebescheinigung" (*) in German.

Applies to ALL types of visa.

* In Germany it is mandatory to register your place of residence when moving in.

I tried to get info from the Thai consulate in DC and cannot get the right answers or answers I understand. I wish to apply for long stay O-A retirement visa.

So here goes.

There are requirements for a "letter of guarantee" from my bank. What does this mean and what does it have to say to qualify for "guarantee"?'

Also, from whom do I get the criminal background check. I recently moved to Florida. Do I ask the Sheriff? or is there a state agency that is required?

For the income from Social Security, my form from the SSA shows the amount per month I get and then deducts medicare from that. I wish to continue to have that deducted. Will the Thai Consulate accept the gross or the net amount?

There seems to be no place on the net where I can find if the documents need be notarized. I checked with my doctor and he will not go to a notary to have it done and neither will any other doctor. Is there a requirement and, if so, where can I get it done that makes it satisfactory?

Since I will be getting a one year multiple reentry visa, is there still a requirement for a return airline ticket?

In your estimation, how long will it take?

Thanks, John S

Thank you. I was totally confused! Before? After? Another multiple entry renewed for 1 yr? Agghhhh...
