Buddhists mark end of Buddhist Lent with merit-making

BANGKOK, 21 October 2013 (NNT) – Buddhists across the country marked the end of Buddhist Lent by going to temples to make merits. On Sunday the tradition is known as Tak Bat Devo. One of the most crowded places was at the Golden Mount in Wat Saket in Bangkok.

Thousands of Buddhists gave alms to 149 monks at Wat Saket as a form of merit-making. Tak Bat Devo is a kind of offering food to monks in Devo style and is normally held on the first day of the eleventh waning moon, according to the lunar year, or one day after the Buddhist Lent. This year Tak Bat Devo was held on Sunday.

This tradition of Tak Bat Vedo is derived from the original Pali term “Devorohana”, which means “the Buddha’s coming down from the heavenly world.” It also implies that Lord Buddha opens the world. It is believed that this time, beings from three worlds; gods, humans, and creatures from hell, can see each other.

Thais divided and marking this historic month in their own ways

Country's peculiar political evolution has seen former allies take different sides in recent bloody skirmishes

BANGKOK: -- One has to be at a certain age to know what "October" used to be all about. And those people must be wishing things were as simple today as they were in the 1970s. There was unspeakable cruelty back then, but at least things were clearly "black" or "white".

Thai researcher wins Euraxess Science Slam Asean 2013

BANGKOK: -- Dr Phanramphoei Namprachan Frantz, a researcher at the virology and cell technology laboratory, National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), has won the Euraxess Science Slam Asean 2013. The competition is a platform for scientists to showcase their research projects to their peers and to the public.

Frantz entered the first round competition by submitting a two-minute video clip singing a rap song about her current work on the development of vaccine combating Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea Virus (PEDV). She was among the five finalists chosen from 40 video submissions.

"The lyrics in the rap are easy-to-understand language, and free of technical jargons, relying on items listeners are familiar with in their everyday lives, in order to get the audience to understand what I want to explain. Making a fun-filled rap song fun makes my presentation more interesting," she said.

The final round of the competition was held in Singapore on September 25, in which each finalist made a 10-minute presentation in front of a live audience of 150.

"I was very happy once the top award was announced for me. I was very anxious and excited seconds before the announcement was made because there were many Singaporean supporters attending the event held in the host country," she said.

Dr Frantz was awarded a trip to Brussels in Belgium, where she will attend the Euraxess Voice of Researchers Conference along with the winners of the other Euraxess Science Slams, which are organised in the US, Japan, India, China and Brazil.
